Relieving fuel pressure?

I'm doing some work to the vic and the manual is telling me to relieve the fuel pressure before I remove a hose. I've never heard of this before, and the way the manual tells me how to do it is pretty confusing.

It tells me to:

1. Disconnect the battery
2. Drain the coolant from the rad and the block plug.
3. Remove the air box and air cleaner box.
4. Remove the throttle cables and all that jazz.
5. Relieve the fuel pressure... that's great, my throttle cables are disconnected and so is the battery and the car needs to run (apparently) to relieve fuel pressure.
6. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Why is it telling me to do it AFTER all the other crap is disconnected, should I do it before i drain the coolant and such. Is it even important to do? Can I get by without it?

Never heard of this before and I'm tempted to skip it but I kinda wanna follow the manual so I don't blow anything up.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Relieving fuel pressure?

hmm i dont remember reading that. i thought it was much simpler like remove the gas cap to relieve most of the pressure, then remove fuel pump relay and start the car til it dies out. maybe someone else can verify this cause im not exactly sure. i dont see why you would have to drain the coolant and remove the airbox and throttle cables tho...

Re: Relieving fuel pressure?

Sorry I must have written that in a confusing way. I'm changing the head gasket and I'm following the manual. That is the order that it's calling for me to do the work in. So, I don't understand why it leaves relieving the fuel pressure until after all this is done.

If someone has a Haynes manual and can do me a HUGE favor and scan the head gasket job and send it to me, it would be greatly appreciated. I have the Honda service manual, it's good but I would like to have backup. Of course everyone is all sold out of my year civic haynes manuals as I've checked everywhere.

Re: Relieving fuel pressure?

So what have you removed???? if your able to start your care for a second there is a way. just follow the step for removing your fuel pump but don't remove the fuel pump. Take the left main relay out and "start" the motor. It should act like it's starting and then die. When that relay is removed it opens the circuit to the fuel pump and drains all of the fuel from the fuel pump. Then you can unscrew your gas cap and you should be good after that. That's if it's not 2 late.....

Re: Relieving fuel pressure?

Yea that's what I'm going to do. I haven't actually started the job yet I'm just doing my research before I start. I'm going to relieve the pressure before I drain the coolant so I don't have to worry about starting the car while stuff is removed. That should solve my issue. I'm starting the job on Monday should be fun... I might take some pics and make a DIY.
