white smoke..what the hek is going on
white smoke..what the hek is going on
ARGGHG!!! First I used to see bluish white smoke coming from my exhaust. I thought my oil was too thin (5w-30) so i switched to 10w-40. I still see a buncha white smoke. I can't find any oil leaks or anything of that nature. I checked the pipes and there is no oil residue in the pipes. My exhaust start smoking white hella after i go semi quick. I look at the exhaust pipe after and theres like drops of some liquid I have no clue what it is. I was wondering if i blew my headgasket so I did a compression test and I got like 180-185-175-180 something like that...seems okay there. Man...stressful. Anyone have any input why I have white smoke coming out of the exhaust? Also I heard a weird static noise while driving today..first time it happend ever. Kept happening for awhile but later it stopped. I HOPE that wasn't detonation....i wasn't really boosting so I don't think it could've been. Please help.
i would just check your plugs and make sure they are alright but there could be alot of things that could be causing the problems if you dont know what to look for in your plugs just check with your local auto shop or look up some stuff on the internet

White smoke usally means coolant is being combusted and sent through the cat. This is really bad because ethylene glycol (antifreeze) has a very low octane rating, which means the cylinder is going to fire before the piston reaches TDC adn you'l eventually blow your headgasket (assuming it is coolant).
So if this is the problem, how is the stuff getting in to the cylinder. well, there's a lot of way, most probable is there is you blew a small piece of your headgasket, a pin hole type that only expands under high stress situations. This will eventually expand and then you'll have some real big problems. To check this, next time you blow smoke, pull over fast and open the resivor for the coolant, NOT the raditor it's self, if it's pressurized (you'll hear a hissing sound as you unscrew the cap slowly) then you have feed back into the cooling system from the cylinder. After that, take it to a good mech and have them look at and see if they can locate the problem, I cn stress enough though to get multiple opions. Enough rambling, hope this helps a little.

He said it was a bluish white smoke.
That usually means you're burning oil.
If its a very thin white smoke, then it's condensation. But from the looks of it....he's burning oil. Take the car to a shop and have them check it out. The bearings on your turbo may be bad....and this could be causing you to burn oil. THere are many other possible issues....but bluish white smoke means....you're burning oil.
And the static noise you heard....if it sounds like some coins rattling in a can...it is detonation (aka pinging)!!!
Check your oil and fill up as needed. It definitely sounds like you're burning oil.....and that's not a good thing.
I'm not sure if you're the one that posted this issue a while back asking if it was the type of oil that you were using that could be the problem and I (at that time) also suggested that you're burning oil. If that was your post....i hate to say I told you so.
get it checked out.

I had that happen to my old LeBaron... but it came out on the intake side and screwed all the sensors up...
If you do that though, how do you know there is enough oil going to the turbo to keep it running properly? I guess I'm not famliar with that specific device.

i kinda have the same problem. when my car is at low idle or i go in reverse and stop suddenly i get a pretty decent amount of smoke, but not when i am actually driving at normal speed. i definately have oil going past the bearing in the turbo and into my exhaust. i called mike at sf and he said he would send me an oil restrictor they have tested. your return line may be kinked or maybe clogged some how. ask mike about the oil restrictor though. mine should be here in a couple days.
i have also read a couple places that garrett turbo's don't like a lot of pressure and the restrictor may be necessary

but if it's oil burning, isn't it supposed to be blue? Damn I'm so confused...I have white smoke but it smells like burning, not like the sweet "your head gasket is blowN" smell. Smoke doesn't really come out during idle, only when you gas it. I didn't check my intercooler pipes to see if there was oil buildup but i did check the intake pipe, bonnet, etc. So again...white smoke, mostly comes out while i'm gassing it. Checked compression, 180-180-175-185 something like that. No oil in the intake/bonnet piping. No sweet smell...more like burning smell. Alright thanks guys

I checked my plugs am am running IK22's. No signs of problems and does not look like any head gasket leaks detected..

The oil lines we supply with the kits supply way more oil than the turbo will ever need. And with some of the kits, the oil drain line will actually be filled up and the oil will be backed up into the turbo. This causes the turbo to burn the oil. The oil restrictor simply restricts the oil flow by about 25%. We have tested this on several cars and had no problems. We also contacted our turbo supplier, and he approved of it. This has solved over 90% of the smoking problems on the cars.
If you have one of our kits, and your car smokes, i will send you a restrictor. Is literally takes less than 2 mins to install. You simply undo your oil feed line from the turbo, slip in this restrictor in the fitting, then re-connect the line.

Guys don't forget to put new teflon tape on the threads before you screw the feed line back in. This will prevent leaks.
If you don't see signs of oil leaks or low compression there are three common problems that you can have.
1) Your oil feed line is too big allowing too much oil to be pushed through the turbo, leaking out of the seals.
2) Your oil return line is kinked or not big enough. It is restricting the passage of oil from the turbo back to the oil pan.
3) One or more of your valve seals can be leaking.

I also pulled the thermostat and drilled three holes in it. I flushed coolant and added 70/30 coolant to water. Car is running cool and no smoke so far.. I guess the thicker oil might effect fuel economy a little. I also fixed my mil eliminator(the pin on the plug had come loose under engine torque.. Fixed that..

Running good no smoke.
Thanks SF.. Great customer service.
