Stock Starter motor fix & tips needed
2005 Civic lx.
asking for anyone with experience repairing the starter motor and what causes it to fail to ignite when the selenoid activates. I open it, sanded and cleaned and it sounds nice smoothly but still failing to ignite at times not as often but still the problem is there and I wonder why this happens. Does it have to do with the bearings? Or is something else

What's the mileage? Could just be worn out, the car is 15 years old. OEM starter from the junkyard is like $30
Re: Stock Starter motor fix & tips needed
Starters have 5 main ways they fail.
Plunger solenoid contacts burned off, gummed up.
Engagement spring/gear wear issues.
Planetary gearbox failure.
Worn out motor brushes.
Broken winding.
Based on you not reporting s problem with audible distress from the starter you should be able to rule out mechanical issues and just focus on the electrical.
Find a rebuild kit that would has new brushes (soldering required) and contacts for the solenoid plunger might be a option. Driving a car with a “iffy” starter is for the adventurous!

Motor brushes still good
Now that you mentioned those I'm believing to be selenoid wear or engagement springs or contacts burned off.
It takes a few tries to get it ignite and it does that tick tick tick sound until it finally starts the motor.
I want to be able to fix it myself
