do what 99% of other people do including me.. put a little electrical tap around the shaft of the shifter rod and pull up the factory ring. so the friction from the tape holds it up.. not enough tape it comes down easy...too much tape.. can't but the original shifter ring over..

I did mine the BEST way. I didn't use a tape since i don't want it to be sticky...
Get a very THICK elastic band. Wrap it around. It may be a bit loose but just run the entire silver ring over it.
the ring will stay up there pretty welll.

Use a thick elastic band to make the diameter of the shift **** thicker.
(imagine wrapping a elastic band around a pencil until you can no longer wrap it)
it'll create a small bump. Pull the ring to run over this bump and the friction will keep it from falling.
Hard to describe but very easy to do. give it a try. i'll take pics with a mock set up if u still have trouble.
