GS400 is... not bad!
Just picked up a Lexus GS400 with my dad today.. guess he finally got tired of the minivan. Got a wicked deal too.. it only has 30,000km on it, and we ended up paying $40,000.. we were debating on a new Acura TL Type-S, but not anymore.
Anyways, I took it out tonight to "wash it"... on the way there I was actually getting harassed by this cowboys in a GrandAm GT. Heh.. I shook my head, but they kept on revving. So I gunned it once, and damn, it was fast! It goes like a mad freight train..
Then I was actally getting revved on by an SVT Contour and an IS300.. but when we stopped at the light, they both changed lanes and got behind other cars.. lol... feels like a being big bully. Now I know how those Mustang/Camaro drivers must feel

True, Lexus are rebadged Toyotas.. but there is nothing wrong with that. Toyota makes great cars, and the most reliable cars on the road. Not that any North American Toyotas currently share any major parts with the GS400 anyway (unlike ES300 & RX300).
As for the German brands, we definitely considered them. But compared to Lexus, they are not that reliable (particularly the BMWs). So pre-owned models were out of question. I also found out after test driving my friend's 3-series, it rides quite rough for a sedan. It was actually a lot rougher, and noisier than even a Camry!
Ultimately, I think the sportier German sedans are perfect for people that only want one car, because it offers performance, comfort & luxery into a single car. But my Father's philosphy is that a person should have three cars. 4WD SUV for cargo hauling & foul weather. A nimble 2-seater sportscar for nice weekends, and occasional spirited driving. And a comfy, quiet & reliable sedan, for daily routines.
I just hope he doesn't get into trouble with it... he's known to drag race. Seriously...

I love the ride on BMW's..the suspension is very sporty..I guess for those who will only be able to afford 1 nice car it's the way to go. As far as noise goes, only the 318/320I's are noisy, the 325's and 330's are really quiet untill your step on the throttle..they they do get a little noisy..but it's good noise.. ...I just wish we got half the decent car models that are available overseas. Like the Altezza Turbo, and Aristo TT, the NSX-R, LAncer EVO-VIII, and a bunch of others...

Speaking of Protecting... I did just that tonight!!
I took it for another "wash run".. ran into a guy in a souped up 7th Gen (silver, crazy bodykit, rice wing).. thought it was a friend of mine, so I waited up for him. But it ended up being someone else, with almost identical car.
Anyway, we chatted it up a bit and left.. soon these guys in an early 90's late 80's mustang showed up. Started tailing the Civic, trying to race it.. so I said f-uck it, Iet's go. And we gunned it a few times while we were going.. GS400 pulled away from it
And it was a modded Stang too! Looked like he had a short ratio gearing and everything... later he wanted to have an offical race.
So we stopped at the light.. I tried to get a good fast launch by doing brake torque (holding the brake, and lighting up the rear tires, so the RPM climbs).. unfortunately, I had no idea how to turn off the traction control. You can guess what happened--the car bogged down, and went into 2nd gear automatically. Grrrr... so I had to play catch up game. I caught up eventually, but the other guy thought he won.
To test it out though, I went on an empty road.. turned off the traction control... held the brakes, and pressed the throttle.. and damn, at under 2,000RPM, I was doing a smoke show! At almost 3,000RPM the back end started fishing tailing That's when I got scared and backed off. Fun as hell though!! Haha... just hope he doesn't check on the tires tomorrow.

Yeah and I hate it.. haha.. I see why they got rid of it on GS430 (well, besides ULEV emission reasons)..
It does not start in 1st gear.. it starts at 2nd instead. So off the line, it's useless.. But when driving down the twisty stuff, it's great. You can downshift before the apex, and exit smartly. It handles quite well for such a big car..!
As for the lifting off the ground, not really. In fact, I find myself doing that in the Civic more (poor damping.. you know, the hop-happy rear). It soaks up mid corner bumps very well. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it leans more than I'd like it to. Maybe I am used to driving two lowered cars, but I expected it from an LS400, not an GS. The other minor complaint is the lack of width of the rear tires. 235s don't exactly do it for a car this heavy, and with 310ft of torque. It needs like 245 at least..
Overall, it doesn't really understeer much either. Oversteer is impossible with the vehcile skid control on.. but with it off, yikes..

Yeah theyre good stock.. I'd hate to ruin the ride of it by slamming it.
When we were shopping for it, we saw one with Blitz front bumper & Blitz exhaust... pretty riced outed. Looked kinda out of place.. plus most likely it was abused. Steering shook a bit.. we passed.
