I think they're probably that expensive because of the transistor that's in our key. They help prevent our cars from being jacked. You can go to crappy tire and see if it's true...

yeah i hear the same thing about what the infamous 2k1sicdn said //

you can try to get someone to duplicate the key //
but it wont start up the engine when you use it b/c that transitor thing will prevent the engine from starting..

It's actually a coded chip inside the key that registers with the immobilizer system in our cars. The key first has to be cut and then programmed with your car's code else the key doesn't work.

but hmm has anybody really tried putting a key duplicated from canadian tire into your car yet ........the honda key seems so simple to have a chip in it have you seen the keys for them other cars with chips they look like they are packing a serious processor in it.

The chip in the key simply stores the code that matches the immobilizer's. You don't need large storage for bits of data.

I've had a regular plain old key cut for $3 at a local conveinence store

I used the master to cut it from, and so it fits into all doors, and thus, also fits into the trunk release.

What happens if you shove it into ignition? Well, you can listen to music.... When you turn it to 2nd position, your green flashing key light stays on, and if you try to turn the engine, it won't turn... (I only tried for a split second, didn't wanna mess anything up.)

Here's the neato part... I stuck the copied key into ignition, and put my original key as close as possible to the ignition, and cranked it. It works.... I never drove with it like that, so I'm not sure if the car checks every 10 minutes or whatever, then shuts off...... But, if you had remote start, that's how it would work....

If you want a real solution, you'd have to buy a real key from the dealer. If you want a key just to get your *** out of the cold if you locked yourself out, get a copied key at your local Crappy Tire. If you want 100 keys that can start your car, get a remote start, and hack up / hide one of your keys
