Running 5W30 Synthetic Now
Running 5W30 Synthetic Now
I eventually decided to go for it, and decided to do an oil change to
Mobil 1 5W30 Tri-Synthetic brand oil.
So I bought a 4L jug of Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic at Canadian Tire for
$26.99 and oil filter wrench for $6.99. I bought a OEM Honda oil
filter for $7.48 at Acura North Toronto and $1.40 for drain washer.
Both were highly over priced. I asked a few questions to the Acura
customer service guy who wasn't very helpful or very knowledgeable.
Then I decided to head to Richmond Hill Honda, where I was able to
speak to a mechanic. He gave me a personal recommendation for Mobil
1 and gave me some tips on jacking up the car and changing the oil.
A much better service experience then at Acura North Toronto.
This is my third oil change, and the first after the two freebies
from Acura. This morning I jacked up my car and used jack stands.
The problem began when I tried loosening the drain plug. I couldn't
budge it? I believe I am doing it correct, I used a wrench and tried
loosening it by going counter-clockwise. Eventually I gave up
because the drain plug bolt was starting to strip a little from my
efforts.
So I called up Acura Markham to see if they could do an oil change
for me since I didn't want to strip the bolt completely. They said
they stocked Castrol Syntec but allowed me ot bring my own Mobil 1
oil. The quote was $21 for labour, filter, and drain plug if I
supplied the oil.
When I finished, the total was a little more because they had to
replace the slightly stripped drain plug bolt which costed an
astounding $5.25 more. Total after tax was just under $30.
So far the engine is running smoother and seems a bit quieter. The
improvement could be partially due to the fresh oil and partially to
the synthetic oil. I'll give it some time before deciding if it is
because of synthetic or just that it is fresh.
My previous oil change (2nd) was at Acura North Toronto and I wonder
if they tightened the drain plug bolt too hard? I was really
torquing it hard and couldn't get it loose? Am I loosening it right
by twisting counter-clockwise?

wait .. i think their is one already...
andoy,
The numbers are viscosity index, the higher the number, the thicker the fluid and the harder it is to flow. Go visit Science Centre, I remember they have tubes of different weight oil demonstrate this.
5w-20 means
1. the oil base is a "20" weight oil
2. the oil behave like an "5" weight oil when cold (w- means winter)
3. the oil behave like an "20" weight oil when hot
Lower viscosity oil will allow the oil to circulate faster at startup (when you start the car, oil pump pumps the oil from the drain pan to circulate)
Higher viscosity oil. while being thicker, will allow the oil layer to "stick" to the metal surface under high stress.
Once upon a time engine oil were single weight and cars were supposed to use different weight oil - depends on the season. Till today, some cars were designed to use 5w-30 but 10w-30 is "allowed" in summer at a slightly higher fuel consumption level.
