Summer weekend wasted (an exclusive rant by TeLLy)

Show season is upon us, and once more TeLLy neglects health, food, drink, and friends to get his car perfect....

Saturday 9am:
So Saturday morning I woke up, put on my freshly-washed "car jeans", "car shirt" (actually an old ClubEL T), Mechanix gloves, old U of T hat, and old shoes. Headed down to my underground garage and laid out the tools to get my sweet ELena lowered back down to impractical height...you know, scraping manhole covers, decapitating squirrels, can't fit a pop can under the lip....impractical. Jacked up the passenger side, took the (heavy!!!!!!) rim off, and sprayed a little additional Liquid Wrench on the perch. The passenger side perch lock came right off with the Hayame spanner wrench after letting the Liquid Wrench soak in for a few days (I had actually pre-sprayed both the fronts earlier in the week, cause I knew how badly seized up they were), and I was able to drop to 1-finger gap from the winter-height of 2 fingers...sweet. Then I went to the driver's side and tried the same thing, but it was so seized up, I ended up finishing the can of Liquid Wrench and rounding off BOTH of my spanner wrenches, as well as the parts of the perch lock. So I went in with standard-sized vise grips (which do not fit ANYTHING on the Hayames btw), a hammer and punch, ANYTHING. Didn't budge, and I hit my wrist with the hammer. At this point I gave up, swore a lot, put the rim back on, and went back and raised the passenger side back up. Then I went back up to my crib and swore some more and started drinking. Stopped in time to sober up and meet the missus for a family party at 4:30 or so. Swore some more, ate some Korean BBQ, yelled at children. Dropped off the wifey at 7am, napped for a couple hours, gathered up more gear, and got ready for the Sunday session...

Sunday 10am:
Went to Home Depot and C.Tire and bought a huge vise grip and another can of Liquid Wrench. When I got back to my car, somehow my screen had gotten offset 400 pixels (50%) to the right, so I had to take the whole touchscreen setup apart and readjust everything as soon as I got home. Somehow I'd turned the brightness control up way too high in the process, so guess what I have to do again tonight. Why oh why couldn't I have molded this thing with a spot for the control buttons! Well, whatever, I was tired of it, decided to hit up the coilovers again. Jacked the car back up, rim off, and snapped the vise grip onto the (ruined) driver's side perch lock. After some hammering (OK, 2 hours' worth) and Liquid Wrench, both used liberally on the perch lock and vise grip, I was able to get the perch lock up and was then ready to lower the coilover! Yay!!!! So now I tried to turn the coilover body with the rounded off spanner wrench (hooked onto one of the other locks on the shock body). Rounded that perch off too, and it was too big for even my extra large vise grip (3 5/8" jaws). Bah! So I even did the unthinkable - I snapped the vise grip directly on some of the threads on the coilover body - don't worry I snapped it on a spot where the coilover would never meet thread, as the car would be so low as to touch pavement. Then I broke out the hammer again. I got 2 cm lowering from this, and I even finished off the new can of Liquid Wrench I just bought. But I think it's now time for some new coils, this is ridiculous, I don't wanna have to do this 2x a year!

p.s. I have a 4-inch gash on my left bicep, a nasty bruise on my left wrist, and various scratches from my knuckles to my shoulders somehow. Is it true chicks dig scars? I hope so, cause if they did, I'd be Brad-freakin-Pitt right about now.
p.p.s. I've been exposed to enough Liquid Wrench for a long enough time that I actually like the smell of it now. Goo.

Wow, nice rant

I thought KW made a good set of coilovers that could withstand a Canadian winter.

^ Thats what I heard as well. one of the guys in Ottawa has them, and he hasn't had any problems after driving them a couple winters.
TeLLy, glad you gout your car lowered again, It would have crushed your heart to have to ride at 2 finger gap all around your car Nothing like the sound of scraping over bumps. hehehe

1) I'm still on Hayames. Besides this seizing, which I really only attribute to lack of maintenance, these coils have treated me well. There's not a spot of rust anywhere that I can see (maybe inside the threaded part...).
2) I can't afford KW, since this is ELena's last year as a contender, before I retire her to a life of leisure. I'm saving up for a house and a second car right now, and who knows, pretty soon maybe my EL will be sporting a Recaro baby seat.
3) I only got a couple of centimetres lowering out of the driver's side coil - I'm still at just under 2 fingers' gap. I'm gonna give 'er another go this Sunday probably, after the show n shine in Oakville that I'm going to. I sprayed the area with a huge amount of Liquid Wrench Sunday, then last night, and will do so every night till Sunday. Hell, it worked on the passenger side, why not the driver....
