Thumbs up Cleaned my Intake!

After doing some research on this website I found some excellent info about cleaning your Intake. So I thought I would share this experience in case others had similar thoughts.

I decided to go to Canadian Tire and pick up the K&N Filter Charger/Cleaner kit.

It cost about $12.95.

My Filter was pretty filthy from this winter and I have had it in my car for about 30K so it was due for a cleaning.

The whole process was very easy and the directions come right on the box as well.

I have an Injen Short Ram Intake so it was easy to access the filter. I just loosened the screw by the filter and popped it off. I tapped and shook off any loose debris/dust and then sprayed it really good with the K&N Cleaning Solution. I let it sit for 10 min to allow the solution to soak in. I then rinsed it with water from the sink (no high pressure) from the inside out to allow the debris to escape the filter instead of being pushed further in. After I was done rinsing it I decided to fill the sink with a mixture of water and cleaning solution and gave the filter a little bath rolling it around in the mixture just to make sure I really cleaned it out good. I then rinsed it again from inside out and shook it to help speed up the drying process. I let the filter sit for about 5 hours to dry which was probably more than enough time and then used the K&N Oil Spray to re-Oil it. It is very important to make sure you re-oil it cause this is what prevents dust particles from travelling through the intake. The oil spray is a red colour so you can see where you sprayed. You are supposed to let the Oil soak in for 20min and then re-spray any areas that you may have missed. After that you are ready to pop it back onto the car and drive again.

I was very impressed at how clean it turned out and it feels like I have more power again but it could just be mental.

Anyways hope this helps some of you.

Good stuff. I use the filtercharger stuff too. I just thought I'd add - I do this twice a year now - once before winter and once after. WAY more than recommended, but nothing you should see how much crap accumulates in there over that amount of time.

Did you notice any difference in sound after cleaning? It may just be psychological, but I swear after I'd cleaned my filter, the sucking noise on idle was louder. Like, more hissing.

I also noticed a bit of power gain - like the flow of air seemed smoother, and yeah, the sound was bit louder at idle too...

Also, doesn't it recommend cleaning only after every 100,000 km? I remember reading somewhere that if you clean more often than that, it actually hinders performance...like the dust buildup actually helps the filter or something? Could be wrong...

That's funny because I too just bought a K&N Filter Charger from Crappy Tire and cleaned my Injen Short Ram filter too. The filter cleaner works awesome... my filter was so dirty that I thought I'd might have to buy another one if this cleaner didn't work but low and behold, the filter looks like it's brand new!

Oh and while I was waiting for the filter to dry, I installed a breather filter I can feel the 0.09 Hp increase

hmmmm... i think it's been 12,000km since i've cleaned my filter ...

when Honda did the regular maintenance at 32,000km they didn't screw in the filter tight enough so it fell off while i was driving home (they had to remove it to get access to the auto tranny dipstick... the heatshield of the FIPK II was blocking it)... i wonder how much dirt my engine sucked up while filterless...

just looked at my intake filter and it's even dirtier than my mind! and that's really dirty!

I have been using the Recharge kit now for a couple of years and it works great. I just did my filter before getting the car out of storage and its working and breathing great now.
Plus I went out a got a new K&N kit while they were on sale at Crappy Tire. $11.95 cant beat it.

its most important for u to realize that u need the time to let the filter sit and dry, i kind of rushed it last year and didnt have a filter when i wanted to drive the car, so what ended up happening was me using a sock as a part time filter, and if u all remember last yrs post it wasnt too good of an idea

haha, the 'sock' incident
socks work great but maybe you should have tied a rubber band around it

I just cleaned my drop-in K&N today. I ended up using too much of the red oil, so I'm letting it drip-dry hanging from my coat hanger in a zip-lock bag. Amazing how much cleaner it looks now...
