Duty - shipping items into Canada
I'm wondering if anyone's had experience shipping items into Canada and had to pay duty. Reason being is that I'm planning on buying some coilovers and a set of wheels/tires from the states and having them shipped here. If you've ordered these from the states, how much duty/tax did you have to pay?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Yes, it's an Acura EL

Generally your duty will be pretty close to GST/PST on the declared value. For example, if the declared value = 100CDN, then your duty will be about 15-20 bucks. Factor in shipping cost (whatever that may be) and then the brokerage fees that the shipping company will inevitably hit you with, and more often than not you're paying the same price a local shop would charge. The only benefit being that sometimes the only place you can get an item is sometimes the states, such as with the Revo short shifter.
haha i dont come to this site that often..
i heard using UPS to ship from US is very expensive. I would use Fedex if I were you. I'm going to buy my rims from US and I'll use Fedex again for sure.

if it's not big, use USPS shipping service, 95% no duty tax
or if it's big like bodykits, try using such service as Greyhound or somethin. just avoid fedex or UPS, you will get ripped by their duty tax service and make sure to tell whoever to send it as 'Gift'

b) Seiko Kinetic watch, i paid $14 cdn
c) Sony Ericsson T68i, i paid $20.51 cdn
d) Blaupunkt MP3 deck, i paid $32 cdn
hope it helped.

I used UPS an and thay charge alot. The fee was about $30 for brokerage and then the tax on the item (I dont remember if it was GST and PST or just GST). The $30 brokerage may depend on the size of the item Im not sure.
And using USPS may not have duty initially but you will most likely get hit at some point in the future. I ordered something, told them to use USPS and I got it without brokerage or duty. But then a couple weeks later i got a bill from PBB (Peace bridge brokerage) THis bill was less that UPS bill though.
The bottom line is that i think anything of size has to be brokered across the border so you are going to have to pay for that.
I'd go with FEDEX from what ive read above.
Peace

Never go to the states on Canada Day and buy from Duty Free b/c you ran out of beer 24 case cans, 20oz ended up costing be $80.
But shipping over from the states isn't that much of a problem, I've ordered plenty of stuff, it just may take a few days to cross.

well, for myself, i got to pay $50 for my T616 cellphone and another $50 for my bluetooth, by using UPS, when i read the receipt, the custom charge is only 15% of the value marked on the product, but then the brokerage fees is double the tax i pay, i guess i will never use UPS again.

FedEx is still cheaper, but you're not going to get away with brokerage unless the value is under $80 or so (I don't really remember).
With UPS you need the value to be under ($20).
Both you still need to mark it as a gift, but somehow with UPS they somehow never see that it's marked as a gift.
If you're really interested in ordering stuff from South of the border, without brokerage fees then UPS offers a "Hold for Pickup" option for no extra charge. If it's something you can install in a parking lot, then you don't even need to declare it to customs.
Just use your name and the following address:
6601 Packard Road,
Niagara Falls, NY 14304
That's the address for UPS in Niagara Falls NY. Make sure that the shipper uses UPS only, they'll reject anybody else's shipments. They'll hold the package for 7 days. Track it online and pick it up when it's in.. It's less than an hour drive from Mississauga.

Thanks for the input, folks... I think I'm going to buy my wheels and tires up here in canada - seems to be *cheaper* than having to pay customs and 15%. I'm looking at ordering them from 1010tires.com, in which case all I have to pay is GST and shipping.
I will be ordering my coilovers from the states though, probably Hayames in the spring.

I just got my Revo S/S from Carsoption. A1 service and the shifter ROCKS!!! What the hell was I waiting for? Now I just have to wait for my bushings so I can bust my knuckles again when I install them!!! I had them ship it to the US, though, like I said above. Lounge_8180 how do they get their product into Canada and you don't pay duty or anything?!?!?
I've had various experiences with duties and tax when purchasing items from the US. I find it depends on the shipper (FedEx, UPS, etc) and other varoius factors.
Recently I had a pair of oem replica fogs purchase by a friend in the US and sent to me via FedEx, and didn't have to pay anything. Oddly enough, 4 months later I get an invoice from FedEx Trade Networks for almost $40 saying they had paid 4 months ago to pass my fogs through customs and now want me ot pay for it. After years of delaing with FedEx, this was the first time something of this sort happened.
US prices are always so much better, but the shipping and duty charges always turn me away.
Ugh.
