Installed my HIDs!!

Wow, I drove at night for the first time since installing my Philips 4100K D2r HIDs, and they are awsome. The road is bathed in white light. They look about the same colour as acuras, infinitys and lexuses. I had to fabricate a glare shield to block out the yellow/green glare that would blind other drivers, but other than that, it was plug and play. I'm just playing around with the aiming of the headlights now to find a level that lets me see far enough ahead while driving at high speed, without people high-beaming me.

I was concerned that I would never get a decent colour/beam pattern by fitting in the hids into a reflector housing, but with the shield I made thanks to hidforum.com there wasn't any problem.

Got a linky to the shield DIY? My buddy gets high-beamed constantly and I want to help him before someone beats him to death from road rage.

Yeah, without the shield, I stood in front of the car and the glare was so bad that I couldn't drive without seriously pissing ppl off - it was truly blinding, and that's even with a d2r bulb.

to make a shield, cut out two squares of aluminum from the side of a can of coke.

sand off the paint on the outside, and the plastic coating on the inside beacuse the heat from the bulb will cause it to vaporize, and this will fog up the inside of the headlights.

bend the aluminum around a pen and adjust the curvature so that it fits perfectly around a 1/2 inch socket wrench.

you will have to trim it in length so that when it is glued to the bulb base, the end of the shield is even with the end of the glass bulb. If i remember correctly, you may also have to trim a little bit lengthwise so that the shield covers exactly the bottom 1/2 of the bulb where the yellow or red salt crystals are.

the top view will look something like this, with the (0) being the bulb:
__
/ o \
' (0) ' < notice that the upper half of the bulb is covered (it will actually be at the bottom when it is installed, but the diagram was easier to make upside down)

the shield should have about 1/8 -1/4 inch of clearance from the ceramic coated return wire. (it's the o in the diagram.

to glue on the slield, use jb weld or epoxy.

That's what i've been wanting to make, the shield!!

I didn't know there was a guide online for it...

Can you post pics of your beam pattern with the shield installed?

I have the 6K kit on the RSX and it's BLINDING bright, but a shield would solve all my problems!

I'll try to post one sometime, the cutoff isn't really sharp, but it's not blinding to oncoming motorists. And Mystix, make your own shield like I did, you'll find info about it at www.hidforum.com in the halogen conversion section I think.
