DVD burner questions...

Anyone have any experience with DVD burners? I've got so much **** on my HD that I gotta move it to DVD

A friend has a Pioneer 1X, and he says it takes him ~40mins for a 4.7GB DVD.

So...
1X == 40 mins
2X == 20 mins
4X == 10 mins
8X == 5 mins?!?!

Is that right?

Also, do I really need to buy one of those friggen dual format burners? Such a friggen hassle...

Anyone with experience with 4X or faster DVD burners let me know .

Hey Fuzzy can I borrow your burner when you're done with it? I need to get rid of my Asian Street Hookers Series from my HDD to make room for more Charmane Star and Kaylani Lei.

Looks like I'll be getting at the very least, a 4X dual format DVD burner.... Not too sure about the 8X ones...

Back on topic ..........

From what I understand..... 6X is as good as it gets....

Even the latest and greatest 8X DVD burners only burn 6X, and slowly speed up to 8X on the outer edges of the DVD (thanks to linear velocity..)

8x burn is pretty much the newest thing there is right now, DVD burning is still in it's infancy....
I think you shouldn't be as concerned with the burn times as you should with compatibility. DVDs are much bigger than CDs, you're not going to get times anywhere near CD times for a while yet.
and incidentally, I don't think 1x = 40mins, I think it's actually a little longer than that.
I'll know once HP gets around to shipping me mine, damn bastards been holding out on me for a couple months now. Shouldn't complain tho since it's free =p

Put it this way....

The 8X DVD+R drive that's out nowadays can burn using "cheaper" 4X rated DVDRs...

I've got well over 50GB of **** on my PC, aside from software backups/ISOs and backing up my computer rig...

50GB of ****, burning at 4X speed will take AGES... Forget about the rest of the stuff I have on my rig...

The faster, the better I just hope my UDMA33 system can keep the DVDR fed with data though at 4X or 8X

And someone give me the correct spelling of "kayleni Lei " goddamnit, a yahoo search revealed nothing!

Ok, here comes the computer expert.

1x 2x 4x 8x is the typical "max" speed of the spin, like CD's. DVD's spin faster than CD's in the first place, so the rate will be variable and not constant. The transfer rate is always rated at the inside track, and the further you go out, the slower. If you look at the speed/data ratio, you'll realize the higher you go up, the less speed gain you get. In this case, though, the difference is not too noticeable, but the DVD also have to be closed. If you use DVD+R, the data is written in a format compatible with conventional DVD, and thus closing the DVD will require a small data set to be written, thus will take ~1min, for DVD-R the disc has to be written with a lot of proprietary info to make it DVD compatible, and thus will require about 3~4 minutes to close, that's why DVD-R's are so much cheaper these days.

Anyway, to answer your question, 4x DVD writes a full DVD in about 12 minutes, while a 2x DVD writes a full DVD in 20 minutes, so you see right there it's not a linear growth, but it's still a lot faster. 8x DVD in theory should write one in about 7 minutes.

As for the media, DVD writers are a lot more picky on the disc format, and in fact, the media now have bits written on them to distinguish write speed, so no more of those forcing a 40xCDRW to write 40x on a 32x rated media. The DVD discs now are made specifically for a speed, so 1x media won't write at 2x no matter how good your drive is. Of course, the same goes, bad media may skip the rating step and you can write at a higher speed, but at your own risk!

Also, of note, with DVD for DVD video, disc quality is very important for image quality. So if you wanna have a good view of those XXXXXXXXX when you burn them on DVD, better buy name brand discs. For data backup, no-name brands work just as well, except they're usually not rated for "media-life".

One last thing, the speed of actually writing a DVD will never reach the transfer speed of UDMA33 (at least on 8x), so having UDMA33 or not will not affect your DVD performance. Rather, the buffer on the DVD writer is the important part. Keep in mind that in most computer products the bus transfer is often not the bottleneck (i.e., take AGP 8x for example).

What's the MAX theoretical speed for DVD that's actually worth it?

A perfect example of what I'm asking about is like the CDR burn speeds nowadays... They go all the way up to 42X CDR burning speeds, yet they only get that fast near the edges.... In theory, on the inner tracks it maxes out at like..... 16X or so. So, in theory, something like a 24X CDR burn speed or 32X would be best bang for hte buck, yet yielding very good burn times...

I GOT ****, I GOT ****!

I actually deleted like 10 gigs of **** in the past while, because everytime I opened up a DivX avi file that had MP3 audio encoding, it would crash Media Player 6.4 I finally figured it out, it was some crazy app named ffdshow (uninstalled it and it worked fine).

Anyhow If I get a DVDR burner before our next meet, you'll get some **** Telly
