CL-S trannyswap
CL-S trannyswap
I was considering purchasing a 2001 CL Type-S, trading the vic in on it. Then i started to browse the CL forums and evidently those cars have terrible trannies. some people have had them replaced like 4 times.
Anyhow, I figured i could drive it till the tranny died and get a 6spd transmission swap. But when i asked the guys on the CL forum, they told me to just buy a 03 6spd instead, which costs, wayyy more.
Sooo, is a tranny swap in that car actually viable? It must be. Does the CL use the same 6spd as the new accord? Do any of you have any idea how much this would run me?
Thnx

My guess is it''ll cost you just as much in the end to swap it over to a 6-spd, then to just buy one with it originally installed. You'd have to price it all out and then compare. Tranny, misc mounts, ECU, wiring, etc.
go for the cl-s .. its a great car .. anyway yes acura extended the warranty, i bought my pre-owned w/ 30g miles , i have a 70,000 mile warranty .. so i know my tranny will go out .. but its okay. 6 spd manual is fun to drive, but i think they only came in the new ones .. triptronic is fun tho .. and still hauls ***!!!

the acura tl and cl's trannys are horrible. The defect is in the 3rd gear clutch pak. when it fails, it shreds and the pieces fly out all over the inside of the tranny, killing it. it wasn't fixed until 2003, and there never was a recall. the problem wasn't fixed untilafter the first few hundred of 2003 where out. i wouldn't get the car, i know to many people who complain about the service when replacing the tranny and have had to repl then numerous times
go for the car if you want, some poeple have gone 60,000 mile without a tranny problem in their 01, and if it has been replaced it has been working like a charm. On the other hand, others have replaced it 3 or more times .... all under warranty though.
My main concern is, I buy the car, works fine. then tranny goes out with no warranty. and i'm screwed.
EDIT: II'm sure someone will eventually wreck their CL-S 6speed, it's bound to happen. 2nd, if you say they fixed the tranny in 03, then that means that if i do have to get it replaced, it should be a one time thing?

Here's what the recall says from Honda regarding its tranny failures:
American Honda Extends Warranties on Select Automatic Transmissions
TORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 20, 2002 - American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced today it will provide extended warranties on approximately 1.2 million Honda and Acura models equipped with automatic transmissions due to problems that may result in premature wear or failure. The extended warranty will cover affected transmissions for seven years or 100,000 miles.
The standard bumper-to-bumper warranty for Honda vehicles is three years or 36,000 miles, while Acura vehicles are covered for four years or 50,000 miles.
Vehicles covered by the extended warranty include:
2000 - 2001 Honda Accord, Odyssey and Prelude
2000 - 2002 and some 2003 Acura 3.2 TL
2001 - 2002 and some 2003 Acura 3.2 CL
While only two percent of these vehicles have experienced these transmission problems, American Honda will provide extended transmission warranties on all potentially affected vehicles. "Our priorities are making sure our customers are taken care of and reassured they can continue to depend on their Honda or Acura automobile for a long time to come," said Tom Elliott, executive vice president for American Honda.
There is usually plenty of warning to the driver that the transmission is not operating properly, such as slow or erratic shifting, giving them ample time to take the vehicle in for service.
American Honda will notify all owners of eligible vehicles via mail in the coming weeks.
