Which engine are we talking???
VQ35
VQ30
VG30
VE30
???

Cuz I think all of them have been in the running for the best engine in the world.... the VG was the best V6 built at one point (300ZX 90-96 and Maxima SE from 92-94). You're really not comparing to similar things... the Maxima VQ35DE now is pushing 265HP, in a car that's $30K... a D17 powers a $16K econobox.
The gas milage sucks, but the engine should be super reliable... Nissan is gambling on that, cuz the engine powers the entire line up. It's got a timing chain rather than a belt in a D17, it's got continuously variable timing and dual length intake runners, a power band in a useful range, torque out the ***, and just about every bell and whistle that can be stuck in an engine... micro finished parts, chrome molybendium coated and polished internals. I'd have to say the Maxima engine beats the **** out of a D17. Maintainance wise, I dunno.. I know its on 110K tuneups, but as far as what before that I don't know, except it doesn't need a timing belt at 90K. I can vouch for the VE30DE... cuz theres one in my driveway with 130K and the only thing its needed is a timing belt at 70K, an alternator and 1 injector went bad...both well after 100K, maybe 2 tuneups, and thats about it.

How are you gonna compare a V6 to a I4? I know it sounds trite, but really now? They are too different to compare. The nissan is an all around better car though although you are right about the honda having less maintenance issues...

Maxima engines are award winning V6's. It's really smooth. It just eats up a lot of gas though, especially in auto.

4th-gen Maximas (96-99) >>>>> * Maximas

The car should fall apart before the engine fails you

Both of them are good engines.
I believe the Honda one is more reliable, but that's just me.
Isn't the New Maxima engine also in the 350Z, but a bit downgraded?

Compared to a Civic, it eats a lot of gas.

For a 3+ liter V6, it doesnt.
