Different gearing in AT and MT?

When people tell their race stories they say things like "x gear ended at y mph" and stuff, but the numbers are always different.

I have an automatic EX.

First gear ends around 34
Second ends around 64
I've hit 100 in D3

But I'm assuming its different for a manual. Where do their gears end?

Can we change that? I assume shorter gears means faster times?

If you change the gearing in your AT, the shorter gears may mean faster times, but they also mean a lower top speed. Because if it's a shorter gear, it will reach peak RPM faster, meaning not as many MPH.

I can tell you the LX model MT speeds for each gear:
1- 33
2- 62
3- 93
4- 113
5- 113

You would only want to have a short gear ratio when you are racing. ATs have long gear ratios and can top out farther than a MT.

I haven't actually looked at my speeds when my AT shifts but I will now.

You may be right! I haven't actually heard the true gear ratio numbers for each gear and total so you very well can be.

Umm... I dont think thats how it is.... if that were true, then AT would be faster than MT cars.

If the 4th gear ratio is the same as the 5th gear, then why put in a 5th gear? the top speed is the same because the computer chip regulates the top speed.

Shorter gearing makes you faster. Yes, you sacrifice some top end, but for one, most stock civics can't even hit their top speed in stock form. They can't even redline their top gear. So who cares if you sacrifice some top end.

If you can get shorter gears, that's what you want in order to accelerate faster. Need more? Read my sig.

As for gearing for the cars, I had them listed once, but can't find it right now. However, I do believe the DX, LX, and EX manual have nearly identical gearing, except for 1st gear and FD. And I believe it's the same on Autos, however, NONE of the Auto gears are the same as the manual gears from what I remember.

Yeah, they need a big *** tripple decker wing to hit their top speed

So can you change the gear ratios in an automatic? I want faster acceleration like a manual has. I realize my auto has less hp than a manual due to its transmission, but still.

there are no governors in ex. i have proved this again and again by the jackstand method. i know the 4th gear in the auto is taller than the 5th gear in the m/t from experience.

Not the same, the listed 113mph is the top speed atined in those gears. The LX's top out at 115mph. That's why you can't go to redline in 4th. You'll hit the speed limiter and your tachometer will read about 6,100rpm's.
