Yeah, Viper is a new development of Ka band laser radar. Ka uses a constant beam to measure vehicle speed, therefore your detector can see the carrier wave of the laser and alert you of it, this is known as active laser radar. Viper is new in that it works like a passive radar in a ship. It is a quick beam of laser light, shuts off, then at a timed interval, another beam. Because the thing isn't on all the time, it's passive. Most, if not all, detectors don't see passive systems because they aren't on long enough for the dectector to see them. The way Viper works, it measures the distance you've covered in between measurement intervals, and computes a speed from the distance.

Thank-you class, now remember to do your homework for tomorrow, and there will be a pop quiz on this stuff on Friday. j/k Actually, I used to sell radar detectors and stuff, and I was damn good at it. So I made it my buisness to know the best.

If you want a detector that might work to detect Viper radar, look at Valentines' V-1 detector. That bad-boy is like $900US, but is sensitive as h3ll, and can be adjusted from min to max sensitivity. It's definitely a toy, but if you have a heavy right foot, money well spent.

Actually, what you described as Viper is just known to us "silly-villians" as instant on. Also, it's either RADAR or LIDAR, not both. If it uses Ka band then it's RADAR, using microwaves to measure the distance. LIDAR is better known as LASER, tho erroneous. Good luck detecting LIDAR boys!
