the statement that civics are bland and boring is absolutely crazy. The car has a base of 15,000!!!! what do you expect. all that pazaz of what you might call less-bland and less-boring cars comes with a price tag. honda keeps putting out well rounded cars for very low sticker prices. and it's made possible so that if you want to make the car more visually appealing or more performance oriented you have that option. The car is released has a building block on which people can mold the car in whatever way they wish. Still most would prefer to leave the car as is and see no point to visual or performance mods. we enjoy that aspect of cars but most do not. most dont care for the stuff we drool over. if honda could release a car more exciting/visually appealing/fast/unique car than the honda do you really think it would come for 15000? Don't you think theyd mark up the price. They wouldn't even call it a civic it would be the s2000 or the prelude. Come on....face it people. the civic is an entry level car at an entry level price. it's up to you to make it more than that. this is why we do it. that is why we are here. and thats why we love civics. the ability to mold a car into the vehicle we believe it should be. you want the best most perfect car. save up 1million and buy a Mclaren F1. leave that stock. you expect a 15000 car do be perfect and all that good stuff then your living in a dream world and have no understanding of marketing.

Honda has never been known for unique styling, but instead for a understated, elegant look. This holds true for almost every model out there. Look at the 6th gen Accords and Civics, for example. They were conservatively styled, and even though cars like the new Celica were hot for a while, IMO they are starting to look very dated (without a bodykit OF COURSE.. kitted Celicas are niiiice.. anyways..) when compared with the older Hondas. Honda's cost-cutting is something every manufacturer does, and if you look at other companies, they are not doing anything different. Magazines rave about the Focus and the Protege5, but I have a cousin that owns a Focus and a friend with a P5, and costcutting is evident in both of those cars just as much, if not more than my Civic.

You want a "perfect" car? Buy a Mercedes-Benz S600. No rattles, perfect fit and finish, and runs 12's stock. Don't let the $100k plus price tag deter you.

I don't know why everyone rags the sedan so much. I think they are cute as a buttom from eery angle except the rear. You have to get over the if it's not a coupe it's ugly attitude.

The civic will be the top dog or one of the top dogs for years to come. The focus is doing well because it's a domestic. If you are a foreign manufacturer, you have little chance in going head to head with honda. In fact, any manufacturer outside of toyota that attacks honda directly is going to loose (import wise). Also, you may get more for your money with another manufactuer, but the civic will still be worth more when you go to sell it, along with the rest of the honda line.. LOL

hondas = good value up front, good value on back end when it's time to go.

did you ever get in any other econocar and try their shifter? damn, you will be back to the honda in a hurry. forget about those reviews, half of them are tossed in by salesmen from dealers of other makes. nobody can rate a civic a 1 through 3, come on!!!

I love driving the EX at 40 - 45 mph in 3rd gear then kicking it!! VTEC rules. Yeah baby!!

Take that list of cars and compare them to any trim Civic here.

CIVIC = BEST IN CLASS/VALUE

sentra is nice. (though the spec V is out of the price range of a civic) so you'd have to compare regular sentra and civic

true... and if that was the case, I'd likely take the Civic ..... Not sure of the pricing in the US but would a Spec V be the same value as the Si (hatch) ?? If so, Sentra over the Si ....

I think that for (a brand new car) under $19,000, you can't do much better than the Civic. The styling aspect is all subjective, but I really like it. It does look faster than it is though. But I'm 17, and I really shouldn't have any more than 150hp for a daily driver. None of the other cars in it's class really do anything for me looks-wise.

Focus - only other option in my mind.
Corolla - looks like a family car
Sentra - can't get the spec V for the same $$, like S2000 said.
Neon - fit and finish eats it.
Cavalier - I'd rather walk. It's safer.
Espectra - I know someone who owns one.. no thanks.
Accent - see Espectra

It's a good product for the money.

I never listen to car reviews. I go and test drives cars that I like and are in my price range. If I like it after the test drive, then I will get it.

I couldn't give a ****. I hear rattles and that's my only problem. But for 15k I got a brand new car that looks pretty damn classy for an economy car. Thats all I care about. Hell my dad's 30k Toyota Avalon rattles sometimes.

the reliable civic stopped after the 6th gen
my 5th gen EG was amazing in terms of quality and well built car. even it was rusting but it has less problem than my 7th gen civic

Sorry, but the 7thgen is lesser car when compared to the other civics that came before it.
It is not as refined. Many, many corners have been cut on the 7thgen. Looks like they just decide not put some stuff on like the plastic under cover that protect the engine from debree.
Thats the main reason our engine bay get dirty so quick. The rubber cover on the back wheel wel is gone. The ruber under coating is poor quailty. The heat sheild for ex is gone. I can go on....

I'm not so sure about the excellent gas mileage part for the Protege.

Protege5 MT: 25/31 mpg -- 130 HP
Mazda6 MT: 25/32 mpg -- 160 HP

Civic EX MT: 32/38 mpg -- 127 HP

Protege5 actually has worse gas mileage than the Mazda 6, while producing 30 less HP.

I know you mentioned that it was not as good as the Civic's mileage, but it's not even close.

I'm sorry, but for an "economy-class" car like the Protege, those are terrible mileage numbers.

The Protege's gas mileage #s are average for it's class. Honda is a company that actually focuses on gas mileage which is what puts them at the top of the list of being of the few cars with the best gas mileage - above average.

I didn't expect this thread to get a 4 page ownage. At any rate, the Civic in comparison to other cars in it's class is definitely at the top of it's list. The Civic living up to being a "Civic" has went down, but you don't see that on Yahoo's page, do you? I'd have to agree the build quality in the Civic has come down a bit but it's not enough to keep it from being a good car in comparison OR overall. I'll have to agree the 5th Generation was the best generation for the Civic and I'll agree, the rattles in the 7th Gen really bite. I was once told that "Hondas are known for rattling" from a mechanic at Honda of Oakland but I have not enough personal experience OR enough people to convince me that's true. This is my opinion - most will agree with me, some won't.

"The Civic, from Honda. It rattles, but it figures."

Whatever man! My future father in law has owned several different generations of the Civic and he said hands down, he has never seen a better looking and feeling civic. He said thats why older civics used to be such a great value, because Honda cut so many corners as far as cosmentics and comfort. He said the seats in my vic are the most comfortable civic seats he's ever sat in, and the interior he simply can't belive belongs to a civic. He likes my interior better than his new avalon. He said more head room, better looking engine bay, nicer looking outside without all the different colored plastic, comfortable stearing wheel, smoother acceleration, smoother shifting and closer range between the gears, and on and on. Have you sat in a 6th gen vic. It has to be be one of the most uncomfortable and ugly interiors I have ever seen. Dollar for dollar, the 7th gen is a far better value then any other previous gen.

That's way they made the civic for the american market ....."cosmentics and comfort". The new civic looks and feel better, that true. They basicly shifted there quality focus. Same thing happend to Cadillac. They were once know for great engineering then they shifted focus build quality fell off.

I myself don't realy care about comfort much all I need is ac and a car that is well put together.
You can get "cosmentics and comfort" from a Ford too....

The Caddys of today are much more reliable than yesterdays. Caddy is the symbol of American Luxury and continues to support that perception.

I have plenty of experience in 5th, 6th, and 7th gen civics. I drive them back to back on a somewhat regular basis. I like the older gens and feel they handle better than the new ones. It always feels good to get back in my 7thgen though. The interior is much nice and much more comfy. Ever take a trip in a civic below the 7thgen. If not, cover a wooden chair with a layer of fabric and imagine your back after an hour of driving.

No problems with me civic besides stupid stuff...I guarantee that owners that don't visit this board and read all the whining would be astonished at some of what is said here...This board really fuels the pos attitude.

oh please.

its just civic.

the new corolla tops out the civic in almost everyway.. but whatever.

obviously you'll get people that will defend their buying decision on a honda civic board...

and i'm sure most of us got the car for a good reason.

so far I'm overall happy with my car.. there's some problems.. but whatever. i didn't break my arm when i got in broadside and spin 260 degree.. the sidearm bag and crash durability of the civic saved my ***... so I'm fine with the car. heh.

albeit its a louder, and a bit harsher ride now cuz of the accident. sigh.

but i really liked the car before i started to mess with it. lol.

I have to agree that i love my car, civic SI/EX, i had a P5 Auto rental for 2 weeks and i was really impressed by the handling, took corners nice and smooth, it does come with ALOT of extras for roughly the same price...BUT, the looks got to me after awhile, i started to miss the smooth lines of my civic coupe and couldn't wait to get it back from the shop, IMHO the coupe just feels sexier than a 4 door, but i love the sedans too when the're modded up.

I drove a mazda for almost 9 years, and that was the most reliable car i've driven, and believe me it went through HELL...and it's still being driven by a friend that i sold it too.

P5, Sentra and Civ are all good econoboxes, but i choose the Civ in the long run for resell value, gas millege and overall looks and feel and huge aftermarket.
