manual transmission

hey i'm getting a new civic ex coupe. i was just wondering if there's any serious damage i could do to a manual transmission besides the clutch. i'm paranoid and just want to be informsed, my family only buys auto's but i think this is a wiser choice. i've only driven manuals a little... thanks

If you shift too slowly, and dont rev it up and dump the clutch at every stop you will blow a seal in the tranny. Then your gears will begin to fall out, and youll be left with 3rd and 5th, the only strong gears in the car. Its realy hard to start off in 3rd, and if you are in traffic, you are gonna stall.

There you go all the facts about having a manual, hope it helps

Just wear and tear on the clutch.

Besides the gears falling out and wear and tear on the clutch, if you race your car wrong you do both, 1. tear up your clutch and 2. blow your tranny. Oh, if you redline too much, you can also blow your engine. That happened to this one guy at me school, although he had an eclipse. He thought he was Billy Bad *** with his eclipse, always redlined the car, and BOOM!, there went his engine. Now he's stuck driving some ford POS.

I don't understand how shifting slow and NOT DUMPING THE CLUTCH will blow any seals....... but here is my $0.03:

Riding the clutch will wear it out. Keeping the clutch pressed in while stopped for long periods will wear out the throwout bearing - so just shift to neutral. Don't shift through all the gears while coasting to a stop because all you're doing is putting unnessecery wear on the synchronizers, just put it in neutral until you know what gear you'll need. Don't shift to fast or too hard, that will also wear out the synchronizers, the shifter should just slide smoothly into gear without any excessive force. Trying to shift to fast you might also let the clutch out too soon, miss shift and grind the gears, which also happens if you don't use the clutch at all, and that really sucks. Don't use the engine to hold the car stopped uphill or you'll just burn up the clutch, just use the damn brakes. As for downshifting, some people will tell you double clutching is good, its fun sometimes, but not nessecary becaues we have synchornizers, so all you have to do when downshifting is rev it up to whatever the engine speed will be in the next gear. Just for an example: at 30mph you're in 4th at 2000rpm, and 30mph in 2nd is 4000rpm. So if you're at 30mph in 4th and you want to shift quickly to 2nd without jerking, rev to 4000 before letting the clutch out in 2nd.

Well, that's all I can think of.

Sarcasm... also notice the at the end of my post... And the ridiculous notion that your gears can actually fall out leaving only 3rd and 5th functional... yep just my 2 cents

Manual all the way. Automatics are more expensive to repair.

lol I just started learning stick a few weeks ago, and I have driven stick 2 diff times. haha.

First day was some funny stuff. I was able to start the truck without stalling and go down the dirt driveway. Had to slow down for a turn. So after I slowed down and took the turn, I Accelerated. hahaha the gas pedal on the truck is soooo sensitive unlike my civic. So there i was completing the turn, tapping the gas like 5 times for some reason. The fun stuff wasnt over. haha. So I had to shift right. Well I didnt let my foot off the gas and i shifted hahaha. Then it came time to brake later on so I braked and clutched. Put it in 2nd cause this is a delivery truck and 1st gear is mostly for uphill stuff. So its time to turn from a stop. I guess I didnt wanna stall, so I just let out the clutch a lil bit and added gas. haha. I ended up dumping the clutch and chirping the tires. haha.

2nd time, we just left work heading out to load the truck and then to deliveries. I had to start the truck and I had the clutch down and it didnt start the first time (old ford POS). I dont know what was up with me that day cause I stalled the truck at least 4 times. The problem was, there was traffic coming and even though there was room to pull out, I didnt wanna drop the clutch and accel to fast and yada yada. haha. Well anyways I finally pulled out and I decided to add gas this time, well I did but i dropped the clutch and chirped the tires ahaha. The shift to 3rd and the shift to 4th were clean. But then I had to slow down pretty quick and make the turn into a driveway. haha. Stalled after pulling in and then started back up and it was pretty good after that.

Hopefully today I'll get to drive the truck again. haha. Ooo ya dont forget, that when you rev the engine, dont drop the clutch lol.

I'll never buy another automatic unless I'm incapable of driving one. Dont get me wrong, an automatic in the right vehicle can be a nice feature. But for personal reliability reasons I prefer a manual over an auto anyday.

Manuals rule! When I bought my civic I had no idea how to drive a manual. My dad actually had to test drive it for me. Once I got the hang of not stalling it, it was great, but for a few weeks I did a lot of tire squealing. Almost got pulled over for it, but I avoided eye contact with the cop so he just drove by after a few seconds of thinking about it. Anyways get a manual it makes any car twice as cool.
