Gasoline powered 3.0 liter I4 vs 3.0 liter I6

which would have the most torque, or which would make the most hp? i hear that there was a japanese utility van/and or truck that had a 3.0 liter I4 with 200 bhp and 250 tq naturally aspirated. do those numbers sound feasable? another thing. the non turbo last gen supras have 225 bhp and 225 tq. this sounds interesting. can anyone give me more info about this stuff? searching didnt exactly work.

There is more to an engine's power rating than the displacement and number of cylinders. Generally speaking however, the 6 cyl engine will run smoother.

A Porsche 968 has a naturally aspirated 3.0L I-4. It is rated at 240hp I believe, quite torquey too. It was an odd ball Porsche as it had a front-engine (instead of mid-rear) and is four cylinder as opposed to the famous boxer six config.

supposedly, inline 6's as compared to v-6 are more costly to make but is better for performance according to BMW, the IS300 also has an I-6 i believe, could anybody shed some light on this?

I6 engines are reputably smoother, however many V6s are plenty smooth.

BMW is one of the only manufacturers who use I6 configs anymore, so they'll use a lot of marketing hyperbole to promote it. An inline config usually requires more engine bay space than a V configuration.

The NA Supra engine you speak of is the 2JZ-GE. The same engine is currently used in the IS300 and GS300. The HP ratings for the IS is 215 and for the GS is 220.

klam is right. Has anyone heard the phrase "smooth inline 6"? That usually refers to BMW's 6. Skyline Gt-R's also use a straight 6. The sound of an inline 6 is a bit different from a V also. The problem I think of I-6 is b/c it takes up more space.

ok, i tried searching the tech stuff but not really much came about. here's another thing. what type of figures would an 3.0 liter I-8 make vs. a 3.0 liter I-4. my assumption would be the 3.0 liter I-8 would make a whole load of hp and not much torque. a 3.0 liter I-4 would make lots of torque but not much hp. plz correct me if i'm wrong. my anatomy prof knows lots about cars engines but he is clueless in answering this.
