my friend just bought a '99 accord LX 4cyl, it was like $7800. anyways i think its great! tons of room, comfortable, decent power, awesome interior imo. it also gets good gas mileage, probably 30mpg or higher. so i would reccomend that to your friend

I would agree with an older accord, Camry...but I would also add a Maxima....older than 96, a Subaru....They have AWD....

If the key word is "cheap" and roomy (I know I´m going to be nailed over this recommendation)

get a Dodge Stratus with the 2.4 liter 4cyl engine. It´s probably the most space you can get for the least amount.

I recommend a Kia. Before the flames, take into consideration 10year/100,000mile warentee so they make up for the fact that they are cheap. And you can get the windows tinted illegally so no one can see you driving it isent that a relief?

89-93 were better cars than the 94-99's. You can't go wrong. My bro's got a 93 GXE still rolling strong even with 130K on it.
It's only a 160 HP SOHC V6, but there was a 190 HP DOHC Engine available in SE trim. And I believe they're superchargable. Only one major problem in all the time we've had it (Since new 4/93) and that was a tranny linkage that went bad after 106K. So I'd have no problem telling you to go buy a 3rd Gen Maxima. Gas milage is in the mid-high 20s. You can probably grab a 92 or 93 for less than $5000 in good shape. If you want something newer than that, go find a 6th gen Accord.

I agree, a 99 chevy/olds/pontiac

Personally I would get like a 99 Olds Intrigue w/ the 3.5 liter Shortstar.
