Valve Cover Painting
Its like painting anything, sand it down a lil so its a lil rough so the paint will stick but not rough enough that it will show through the paint.
Then add a coat of primer, really only one coat is necessary, if your painting it a dark color use a dark primer light color light primer.
Then add 2-3 coats of the base paint whatever color you want it....I suggest one of the 500 degree paints
Then add 2-3 coats of clear coat/gloss and you should be fine let it dry! - I put my stuff in front of a heater they dry faster....Also I bought 500 degree clear coat so use that also.

Do you really have to primer I heard it wasn't necessary and my friend accidentally used touch up paint on his does that make a difference cuz I heard the valve cover doesn't get that hot?

No, do you don't have to sand it, prime it, or coat it. Nor does the paint matter (although water colors probably won't work). I used enamel modelling paint. It's oil based that I had left over from building a couple models. You can pick up a little bottle at a hobby store for like $2.00. I just painted several coats (allowing it to dry inbetween). If you want to paint the letters, just use tape and mask off the other parts. If you're worried about the paint melting, it won't. I drove about 150 miles back from middle tennessee one night and once I parked the car, I popped the hood and took off the valve cover. It was still cold. I've had my cover painted for a few months, and I've had no problems with the paint. Good luck!
These pics have some glare, but it's as good as I got.
