The car and driver review of the new convertible beetle
I was reading the review of the new car and driver of the beetle convertible and thought I'd post a few highlights. IMO, the car is laughable at best. I can understand if you want a cheap convertible.... but seriously, as weak as this thing is, I consider it a safety hazard it's so damn slow.
Here's a few notes from C&D:
They compare the look of the car to "an old porsche 911 turbo" when the top is down, mostly due to the way it folds down and sits on the back. They are smoking cat poop if they think it looks like a porsche. It looks like a chopped beetle with a bookshelf on the back.
"The engine will NOT be your source of entertainment. At an unremarkable 115hp, even with the 6-speed auto transmission, it takes 12.4 seconds to reach 60mph. By that time it's already damn near the 1/4 mile mark." Haha... that's funny.
"For high-speed passing, you must submit a written request. The transmission will consider things for a while, and then the engine will inevitably deny the request." In other words... it sucks.
"The transmission has a manual-shift-sport mode, that when combined with the 115hp engine, is about as much fun as crotchless snow pants". Yes.... they actually said crotchless.
And if that's not enough to turn you away from this piece of crap... maybe the whopping 73mph trap speed will. I know some of you will say "but the piont isn't all about straightline". Yeah, it's not. But when you can't go fast in a straightline, much less reach 60mph BEFORE the end of most on-ramps, turn for crap, and have that ugly beetle look, then what is the point?
Lastly, there was a picture of some old guy drivin the beetle, top down, with a big grin on his face. I'm sure he was photoshopped in, because no man I know would smile driving such a pansy car. EvAr.

The 2.0L SOHC 8V engine that has been in the VW parts-bin for what seems like forever is also powering the New Beetle Convertible...although it does have an indsutry first (for a FWD car) 6-speed Automatic, it is still slow. I would think it might be even slower than the 2.0 in the hardtop, because of all of the structural hardware needed to make a convertible free of cowl shake and shuddering. I have heard from lots of people who drive VWs and they say that this motor is peppy...which means its good for in-city driving. I think it's on the highway where this car will run out of steam...and the car mags seem to agree. 115 hp can only get you so far. And about this car being a piece of crap; read the whole article, Car and Driver said the the convertible was very well engineered and had a great structural feel. Also, VWs are now the standard for fit/finish and interior quality, and I think some of them look pretty good (although the Jetta is a chick/flamer car in stock form).
But, saving the best for last...the 1.8T engine will be finding its way into this new convertible very soon. I think it will be worth the wait.

P.S. - NoFriends - dude, take the VW out...can we say "chick magnet?"

My MALE friend drives a blue beetle with 17" rims on it and an intake...I try to be nice to him but its so hard not to make fun of it....its weird too because his father and him do resoration work on Porsches' and he could probably restore a car by himself....
I sure wish my car was newer

I had no respect for the Beetle until I saw one smoke a 2000 Civic Si. It was some punk looking kid in the Si, and an older guy I have seen driving around (in other cars, I assume this was his wife's) in the Beetle. The guy in the Si thought for sure he'd win against a pansy Beetle, but the old man smoked him. Was it a fair race, and do the numbers favor either car? I don't know, and I don't really care. The 1.8T Beetle is a decent car in my mind, not that I'd ever buy one though. Its sort of like Joe C from Kid Rock's band... three foot nine with a ten foot d**k.
