2000 Si or no?
My friend is looking at a 2000 Si and I want to know if it really is an si, since it is debadged and has the side DOHC VTEC taken off. It has the stock Si rims, but you can throw those on it aftermarket now. It has a stick shift, it is Milano Red. However, it does not have the Si stock exhaust, no tip on it or anything, looks like an ex stock exhaust. It has the underbody skirt that si's have, but can't you get that put on at the dealer too? I thought that I could look at the engine, but the Ex and Si both have 1.6 VTEC. How can I see the dual overhead cams, or see if this thing really is an Si?
I sure wish my car was newer

I believe the Ex will have a D-series engine code while the Si will have a B-series. B16 maybe? Just pop the hood and look around, you will find a little silver piece that has the code stamped into it.

look for the engine code.
ex - D16
si - B16
if u can find those 3 letters/numbers.....then u got urself the answer
if i'm not mistakened....the d16 head is a bit more round ( rounded corners) while the b16 is more like a rectangle. Also, the d16 has no wire cover over the sparkplugs. the b16 has the cover and it SHOULD say DOHC VTEC on it..... i think
ex - D16

like one guy said, check for the code, b16 if its an si, should be somewhere on the block, down by the exhaust manifold, and the ex is a single overhead cam, so that would be another way to tell because the si is a dual overhead cam, just look on the valve cover, dohc vtec for an si.....and then look to the right of it for two cam gears lol
IMO, if you can't tell D series engine from a B series engine, you have a lot to learn. But other than that, just look for those 3 letters, OR look to where the cam gears should be, if you see 2 of them, it's an Si, if not, it's an EX... You could also just look at the guage cluster. It should say Si on them and the top speed should be 160 MPH.
OMG the B16 looks so different from the D16. the B16 is a large black rectangle and a center silver stripe, like the H22. the D16 just looks small and weak, its silver throughout and the shape is like our D17. go look up some pics on edmunds.com

If you can't tell a DOHC engine from a SOHC, you may want to take another buddy along with ya...LOL They look just a wee-bit different...
Look for the engine code to double check once you have established it's a dohc...lol

Anyhoo, lets get this over with.
*ahem*
My 2000 Si.

First of all the instrumentation should look like this:

The seats should have this pattern is this color, with holes in the head rests. ALL 99/00 Si seats are the same, and the EX and lower all had solid head rests w/ a different pattern on the cloth in the center, and of course came in different colors.

There should be a black mesh grill, no matter what color car. All Sis came with this stock. Ive removed the front H on mine, it may or may not be there.

Rear discs. Only the 6th gen Si came with rear discs (as small as they may be) instead of drum brakes in the back like every other model.

A basically stock engine bay. Immagine that with a stock air box on the left and you have a stock looking engine bay. You can kind of see my nitrous solenoids and what not under the intake. The strut tower brace is 100% stock as well, that should be there.

ENGINE LOOKS LIKE THIS:

BEST way to tell what engine is in the car. Look here, right of the black radiator hose and directly left of the exhaust manifold's heat shield (thing on the right with the dip stick sticking out of it). You will see a stamp which should read

Oh, and about the exahust... if you take the removable tip off of the Si's exhaust, it looks pretty much like a stock EX exhaust.

and just for fun...
the box of goodies that im going to be installing soon.

Joe,
Thanks so much for being so helpful!
You answered my questions amazingly, and thanks for the understanding,
I just don't want to be stuck with an EX, instead of thinking that I had an SI.
Thank you again,
Pat

When I got my Si, I wish I had been able to get the blue. I had to choose either red or black, so I chose black. But still wished I had blue. lol
