Shifting in an automatic

My other car is a 2000 Accord V6 and the owner's manual actually has a section for how to shift the automatic like a manual. That would lead me to believe that it can't be too harmful. It's kind of pointless though - the car is much faster when I just put it in D and let the transmission do what it is supposed to.
