Is this a good price?

My friend is sellling his 91 civic Si (canadain SI) for $400 CAD but needs new brakes for the front and it has 170k in km??? I'm just gonna be using it as a winter beater.
He said hes going to have it checked by a mechanic cuz he plans to just get ride of it he already bought 99 hatchback so he doesnt really care what he sells it for. I'll update when the mechanic check comes in. There is also some rust on the around the wheels.

That sounds really super cheap. Make sure there isn't anything else wrong with the car (for example, is there an engine in there?). Check Autotrader.ca for prices. I saw a lower-end 91 Civic in there with more milage, and it's like $5000 CDN.

*edit*

Here's another I found on that site, just so you know what you're up against:
Year : 1991
Make : HONDA
Model : CIVIC
Model Detail : SI
Price : $4,595
Mileage : 215000
Ad Code : CCZZYY
Date: 12/30/02
Features : Black ext., black int., 5 spd., 2 dr., alum. wheels, stereo, CD, chrome muffler, alum. pipes, perf. clutch, clear corners, crystal lights, sunroof, Momo steering, cert. E tested. 215,000 kms. $4595.

That sounds like a good deal, but it might be too good to be true, might want a professional to have a look and see just be sure. Just so you dont get screwed when inspection time comes and its going to cost you like $2000 to make it pass.

Just so you know:

1991 Honda Civic:
MSRP: $10,395 CDN
2D Hatchback Si - Average Tarde-In : $2010 CDN
Retail - Clean: $4700 CDN
Reatil - Average: $3275 CDN

Source: National Auto Research Black Book.

Hope this helps ......

That's cheap. These things run forever and really how tough is it to do a little work on the basics?

400 bucks can?? Might as well buy it.. it's not that much cash.. Even if you dont drive it, you could probably sell it for like 1000CAD if not more

is it a good friend? if so, i wouldnt be concerned about him screwing you, bc you know where to find him if indeed he did, i would say if it runs, buy it, like you said, its not going to be a primary car.

Thats super low. So after a full check of the car, if its solid... BUY IT. Hell, Winona Rider stole shirts that cost more than that.

well a basic rule of selling a used car is not to sell it to a friend. reason being is that if it breaks down or whatever you know you will be crawling back to the previous owner. in this case, he sounds like hes on limb trying to get rid of the car... play it safe, have it inspected, if its good... then take it and have fun

Is it a dude named Skyler?..

I know he has a 91 Si hatch he's selling for cheap and it's been nothing but a money pit for him....

$400 is a good deal..but for the rest of you guys reading this... in Montreal 88-91 Hatch's sell for under $1000 all the time because around here they salt the roads and underbody and suspension rust kills cars after 10 years..
