Small block is the outside dimensions of the engine..GM uses basically 2 blocks, both with different bores and strokes..but for the most part identical size on the outside.. a Small block is your standard 305 and 350 block...from bottom to top it's pretty short.. about 28" across or so...

a Big blck, like the 428 and 454 uses much larger cranks and bigger bores..and the engine is quite a bit larger and less compact in design.

a Long block has nothng to do with the size or type of engine..it refers to the parts included with the block... a Long block crate motor includes all neecessary parts to run(block, heads, pistons, rods, oil pan, crank etc.), except engine accessories like alternator, Plug wires..

a Short block is litelly just the cyclinder block itself

the block size determines weather its classified as a big or small block. and im talking about the actual block and not the internal engine volume. a 400 CID block stroked to 427 would be a "small" block still, however if the blovk it self was 427, then it would be a "large" block.

short blocks are the lower portion of the engine, ie an engine without the head. long blocks are the entire engine.
