General Tranny ?

My friend's noticed his tranny slipping the other day, the car runs fine except once in a while the tranny slips. He has a 97 cavalier with manual tranny. Well we started talking and we both have had occasions where out transmissions have gone out and every time we taken our cars in for tranny work it always has to be completely rebuilt. Now my question is are transmissions a type of thing that once it starts going the whole thing needs to be replaced or if you catch it early enough can only parts of it be fixd instread of the whole thing. Thanx for any info you can give.

If your manual will slip when under power, but the transmission goes into gear and stays in gear OK, you may only need a clutch and throw out bearing. Sometimes a manual will make a lot of noise while in neutral with the clutch out, this is often a throw out bearing going south.

Good luck and get a second opinion.

well....firstly, you need to understand that a manual tranny does not slip, the clutch can slip, but not the tranny
