Iv used both, always in a full synthetic. For the last 3 oil changes iv always used 5-30 or 10-30 b/c its easier to find, and Iv had no problems.

Yes you can use 5W-30. It won't do anything to the engine. Just pour that shyt in.

Check this out http://www.bestsyntheticoil.com/amsoil/5w20-cafe.shtml. It should help you sleep better at night.

I would recommend 5w30, especially if you push your engine hard. 5w30 will provide better protection than 5w20. Why do you think the dealerships use 5w30.

I called the dealership about this a while ago, and they said that since our manuals say to use 5w-20, any engine problems caused by any other oils i.e. 5w-30, 10w-30, will not be covered under warranty. It's just oil, do what the dealership says!

I've noticed a 1-2mpg improvement with Motorcraft 5w20 over Mobil 1 5w30.

I like this post by silverdevil in the past:
As far as what oil to use, don't, I repeat, don't use the 5w20 that Honda recommends. Instead use 5w30 or 10w30. I use 5 in the winter and 10 in the summer. Xw20 does not provide enough protection to engine parts because the viscosity never reaches the thickness needed for LONG LASTING protection. You get better mileage because of the reduced viscosity. However, your car will run warmer and you might risk pre-ignition or detonation if you drive under extreeme conditions.
It's not just oil. It's what could help keep your engine lasting a long time.

"Question: Don't I have to use a 5w20 oil to maintain my factory warranty if my manual recommends a 5w20 oil?

Answer: Absolutely not. Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain viscosity grades and American Petroleum Institute service requirements. Whether the motor oil is a 5w20, 5w30, 10w30 or 0w30 or even a synthetic vs. a petroleum-based oil will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets API service requirements and specifications and was not the cause of the failure.

In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson - Moss Warranty Improvement Act states that a manufacturer may not require a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge. If your dealership continues to tell you that you need to use 5w20 oil to maintain your warranty, then ask them to put it in writing. If they indicate you must use a particular brand of oil to maintain your warranty, tell them you expect it to be provided free of charge.

Their position is inaccurate and, in fact, violates existing U.S. legislation. Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. That will provide enough fluid to send oil to 2 independent testing labs for analysis. Remember, being a knowledgeable and informed consumer is your best defense against being taken advantage of by a car dealership service center."

Sounds like your dealership just wants to bend you over.

No dealership in their right minds will deny a warranty claim simply because you used 5w-30 instead of 5w-20. Besides, there is no way for them to tell what kind of oil is in your car, short of sending the used oil to an analysis lab.

Allthough royal purple is a damn good oil the only claim it increases power when your using all there products. Such as fuel additive, power steering fluid, tranny fluid, coolant aditive, etc, etc But its still a good choice in oil

i've had no troubles with 5w-30. however, when i switched from 5w-20 (Honda dyno) to 5w-30 (Mobil One), i went from 39 mpg down to 35 mpg average. the loss is probably due to viscosity, not brand... and i might switch over to 5w-20 Mobil1 once they release it on the market next year....

anyone know if it's bad to mix 50%/50% of 5w-20 and 5w-30 as long as it's the same brand?
