5W-20 oil questions
I had my oil replaced Saturday by this Express-Lube place that uses Castrol GTX. I 've been using this place for 3 years now because they allow me to use my own Honda filters. This morning I decide to look at the oil to make sure it's at the full line and what I saw was a brown to dark brown oil resembling 10W-30 color. It was by no means the old oil. You could tell it was fresh oil, it was just darker than I 'm used to seeing.
The reason I looked at it, was because something told me the guy was lying when I asked him if he had 5W-20 oil in stock. He hesitated and then said he did. Plus I 've been getting crappy gas mileage lately and I think it's attributed to these people not putting the proper viscocity (and thin) oil in my car.
Does anyone know what color Castrol GTX 5W-20 would be? I use 5W-30 on my '99 Integra and also used it on my '97 Civic for 4yrs. 5-30 oil is much lighter than this oil that 's in my car now. And I remember 10W-30 was even darker and 10W-40 even more darker. My 5W-30 that I use today (Castrol GTX & Mobil 1) on my Integra has a light blond color. I 've owned 14 cars since 1983 (I 'm 37) before I started buying Hondas, so my experience has been that the color gets lighter or blonder the thinner the oil is. Am I wrong? Does color have nothing to do with Viscocity?
Any help to see if this guy is lying to me would be appreciated. I went to a local auto-parts store and K-Mart and they didn't carry 5W-20 oil of any kind, so I can't compare it whith the stuff in my engine.. thanks

Amsoil Synthetic
5-20 is recommended by honda because of california emission laws.
It is prefecty fine to run 5-30 or 10-30. The grade of oil does NOT
affect your warrenty.
Sounds like to me, they did not drain all of your oil, or they did not change your filter. That could be why your oil is darker

I saw them drain the oil and watched the guy install the Honda oil Filter that I had given them. I then walked away for a couple of min. and when I came back they were closing the hood so I didn't see what they put in.
It could merely be the brand of oil they used. For example, Valvoline 5w30 is light brown when it's new, but Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 is much darker. I've even noticed that the new Mobil "SuperSyn" 5w30 is darker than the previous Synthetic they released.
