WTF??!!
Ok, I think the laws of physics cease to exist in my gas tank or the pump wasn't callibrated correctly because I just pumped 14.38 gallons of gas into my car. I thought we only had a 13.2 gallon tank. Maybe I should go take my receipt to the owner and demand some money or something...

The thing is this. When the pumps get tested, they get tested at 5, 10, and 15 gallon intervals. So some pumps have computers that speed up so they show up as pumping more than it did, but they slow it down near the tested intervals. Learned that from a TV show that demostrated ways that companies cheat people. Side Note: Another example was cabs that underinflate their tires so they are smaller. Smaller tires spin faster, and since the distance is determined by the number of rotations, you get charged for going farther than you did.

question is... how long can you go or far can you drive when the oil light is on and the needle is pointed at the last line....[hr]

I generally have about 3 gallons left when my light comes on. Depending on the mileage you get...I feel comfortable squeezing out at least another 75 miles before getting nervous.

The supply pipe from the tank to the nozzle has some volume, my guess is about 1.5 gallons. There is some major fraud involved in gas stations though, and try taking an empty gallon container (approved to put fuel in) and see how close it is if you are really concerned.
