Making fiberglass

Anyone know a good site on how to do this? Is it hard? I figure it can't be too hard if they have 15 year olds doing custom fiberglass stuff at Hi-Fi Buys. (Hi-Fi Buys suck as do Best Buy when it comes to installation... at least here.) I'd like to learn how to build moulds and make fiberglass/carbon fiber replicas and custom designed stuff for my car, not for others...

I was thinking of the same thing... that would be cool, but how could you efficiently make a mold... can't be that easy without having to get a mold machined for you

EDIT: how to make fiberglass just found this... you still need an original mold though.

EDIT: How to make a "plug" Here

EDIT: How to make a fiberglass part... here

I've been told that you can do it like advanced paper mache. My friend and I built an apparatus to hold his PS2 under the passenger side dash in his 328i and we're going to just cover it in fiberglass to make it look nicer. I'm told you don't need a mold for something like that, only if the entire structure will be fiberglass.

I think we are talking about full fiberglass parts... but thats true that you could do that.

I've read enough to know that you can use particle board to create the mold, apply with special made anti-stick stuff to keep the fiberglass off. In a nutshell of course.

My idea was for the console in between the seats. I was thinking of creating one in which the place where the cupholders are, it'll be flat. When you push it, the headunit will pop up at an angle. I also wanted something in the back of the brake handle, where you push it and comes up with my CD's. ( Because I'm tired of the CD's rattling in that space dammit!) And where the cubby is underneath the brake handle, is going to be a recessed semi-circle kind of thing for my switches, to control the neons and other stuff. Sorry, had a fascination of Batman during my youth.

You should see my design for my amp rack and sub.

That HU thing sounds sweet, but you would probably have to get some serious springs to push the weight of a HU.

I did, thanks! I added to my favorites for future use

Actually, for springs..you know how the stereo cabinets use magnets? I was thinking along those lines, you push, the magnets no longer attract, therefore it'll rise.. I'll figure something out.

I gotta say that is gonna be an awesome project... if anything... at least you'll be able to see the stereo face, I have a clarion and you can't see it during the day, and at night you can sorta see it because of the angle. No matter what though, the passenger could never see it and I'm sick of always being asked the time

Good luck.. i wanna see that sh|t

I know how you feel...switches and lights have always facinated me (carbon fiber too). I did this last weekend:

It's not actually carbon fiber, sorry. Its just the installation kit from Crutchfield covered in a cabron fiber look alike sticker (from www.viggdesigns.com ... it's meant to look like a carbon fiber hood, but I won't stoop THAT low)

It's an Aiwa CDC-MP32 HU...not the greatest in the world but it works and was (relatively) cheap. The lights are crystal clear LEDs from jameco.com and RadioShack each wired in series with a 1K ohm resistor. Top two blue are for neons and misc lights, yellow is for fog lights, red is for subwoofers, and the bottom one is a flashing red on for my non-existant security system.

The switch panel. Originally I was going to use rocker switches instead of toggle switches but there was no way I was going to be able to fit four in one switch panel (btw, those little peices of plastic that the switches are mounted in cost about $7 each!)

HU closed. Note the subs automatically turn off when the head unit is off. Once I get the flashy red light hooked up it will flash only when the car is off (using a relay hooked up to the accessory wire on HU)

And we can't forget the carbon fiber look on the wireless entry remote...ricey...I know

You may notice that this head unit is designed to hide by folding closed. The carbon fiber sticker sort of defeats this purpose. But if any semi-intelligent theif were to look into any car with this or a similar HU and see no stereo but a large blank panel instead they would most likely assume it's a DVD player or high end stereo and want to steal it even more.

P.S. I would like to see your amp rack design. I'm making a simple one, just bolting the capacitor and amp onto a piece of wood covered in none other than...the carbon fiber sticker!
