Speedometer adjustment

If I get smaller-than-stock wheels, is there any way I can readjust my speedo/odometer so it reads correctly? I don't really care so much about the speedo, but I don't want the odo to rack up a bunch of miles I didn't actually drive.

Bring it in to the dealers and have them readjust it.

I thought that costs $$$$$$$$$$ though. Isn't it expensive?

Just get tires that are close enough to the stock speedometer. Use the easy tire calc to figure it out. Tire Calc!

I'm getting 16" Slipstreams and I don't want to use 55 tires. I like at least 50's for handling reasons.

I've been curious about that myself... wondering if anybody has had their ECU/speedometer recalibrated so it would read the correct speed if i wanted to get a wheel/tire combination that was shorter than stock.

How does the speedometer get affected by change in tire size? I "thought" logically it never mattered.

Is my math that bad?!

Yes your math is that bad. Just research wheel size/speedo adjustment, you'll see.

When the car comes stock from the factory they know what size the wheels/tires are. The car's computer measures how many revolutions the wheel makes in a given ammount of time, and then calculates your speed from that.

If you change the size of the wheel to something smaller than stock, it makes more revolutions in that time period. The computer doesn't know that you changed wheels, so it still applies the same math to a smaller wheel, and therefore registers a faster speed.

Back on topic: Is the general consensus that the dealer should be able to recalibrate it? Is there anywhere else that can do it? Maybe something through AAA?

From what I know the Odo doesn't use that input to calculate how far you have traveled. I don't know how but I guess your speedo can be off by whatever amount but your odo will allways be accurate.

Be carefull driving if you don't recalibrate the spedo. As I'm sure you are aware, you will have a slower indicated speed so you might think your doing 55 when in fact you are closer to 62 or something.

yeah the odo works off of the speedo input. if your going 60mph it clicks off a mile every one minute...etc etc..

If I were putting larger wheels on I'd have that problem. My problem will be the reverse, my aftermarket wheels will be smaller and so my speedo will show a faster speed than what I'm really travelling.

so far looks like nobody here has had their 01+ civic recalibrated for shorter wheel/tire combo
