Celica or Civic?
If I have the chance of getting a Celica GT for that little over a the price of a Civic I would do it. Just the improvements in handling alone would worth the difference.
I don't understand when people say 10 HP doesn't make a difference. You don't "feel" horsepower. Engine doesn't make horsepower...it makes torque and it's the torque that makes the difference. Two different engines can have the exact peak horsepower but if one has a flater and wider torque band then it would out accelerate the other when used in the same car. From what I remember the Celica weights about the same (probably lighter) than the Civic and the Toyota engine has a much flater torque curve. So unless you are an absolutely hopeless pathetic driver I won't even call it a driver's race. The Celica will walk the Civic, in straights and in the corners.

I f&^ing hate Celica GTs. I'm convinced only assh*l#s and manginas drive these cars. In fact, I think that was the first car I tried to race against. So what if it gets 13 more HP. You can't really feel a 10 HP difference.
The Celica GT-S compares to the RSX Type S, and I'd get the Type S just cuz it has 15 more HP.

The RWD Celicas were nice.
EDIT: You can break 15s in a Civic stock if you know how to drive. With cam gears, intake, some GOOD headers, and exhaust mid 15s should be easy. But I will agree the GT does have a SLIGHT advantage being that it starts out with more HP than an EX Civic.
Ummmmmmmm... have you ever thought about WEIGHT? And GEARING? And actual horsepower at WHEELS?
Fact: Celica is almost 400lb lighter than the 7th Gen Civic
Fact: Celica's gearing is WAY shorter than the Civic's
Fact: Civic EX's horsepower at wheels is barely over 100; Celica pushes 125.
Factor those in, smart guy. It equals significantly quicker acceleration. Don't roll your eyes. Get the facts. Own both, and understand. Don't just guess.

fact: celica gt stick (2425lb) is 125lb lighter than a civic ex stick (2550lb)
fact: gearing is shorter, true.
fact: Ex actually makes about 110 at wheels, sorry no way of a 27hp (20percent) loss in a 127hp fwd car.
yes the GT is faster, but not that significantly so.

Okay.
Then I'll challenge anyone on this site, with a Civic EX/LX, without NOS/Forced Induction to a race... I guess this only applies to Canadians, since I am in Canada.
Don't forget--Civics are slower than Corollas. And Corollas are slower than Celicas. So for someone to say Civics are faster than Celicas... you're on crack.

Agreed... there are tons of idiot drivers out there. But that doesn't really make any points though... I've seen a modified Hyundai Scoupe Turbo spank an Acura NSX at the race track...... only cause the NSX was doing 14's.

Significantly, hardly. Faster than a Civic? Yes, as I've never said it wasn't. But significantly? No. Still a Civic could give it a run for it's money. You put an average driver in a Celica GT Vs. an experienced driver in an EX... the Celica would lose.
The celica is faster, I've driven both. And the horsepower is 13 more, not 10 for the record. There's more torque, and that's an important number. So if you want a little more speed and extremely better handling, along with a much broader aftermarket performance selection, go for the Celica if you can afford the slightly higher price. The civic is more of a family car...
Hey all,
I found out about this conversation and just had to add some real information to go along with 01coupe. I used to own a 94 Civic 5-spd with intake, DC Sports headers and DC Sports exhaust. Let me tell you right now that even with those mods I would get clobbered by a Celica GT. How do I know? Because with those mods i got beat convincingly by my friend who owns a 2k Corrolla S and it's stock. The reason for this which you are all forgetting is SOHC vs DOHC. All Civic's except for the SI's and R's are sohc and that makes a world of difference. I still love Civic's if my car hadn't been stolen and totalled (a**holes caught and getting reamed in jail) I'd still have it but now way in hell a lightly modified Civic EX is messing with a 7th gen Celica GT.
The Celica's are something for your big brothers, the RSXs and Integras to play with. Oh yeah I now own a 7th Gen Celica GT 5-spd.

Yeah, leave us celicas to your previous Gen Si's and your Turbo Ex's, i mean a well-driven GT can nudge out a properly decently driven Teg GSR, you guys dont really stand a chance against a stick shift new celica, our auto's would be good runs for your 5-spds, even our autos are quick for auto 4-bangers, high 16's low 17's (GT and GT-S)

i would take the clica over a civic any day!
my friend has a celica gt auto and i have a civic ex auto, we run around on the road in the middle of the night all the time, and i can clearly see his advantages
even with my suspension mods vs him stock, i can only barely hang on to him
his car is faster in the straight away, no doubt
celicas are capable of slaloms over porsches and many other cars with a couple hotchkis suspension mods (source, the hotchkis website)
it's design more aerodynamic than a civic
it has a DOHC motor, not a crappy SOHC
lighter car
and about not trusting vvti....
if i remember correctly, Toyota's first "vtec" type motor had a technology called TVIS (Toyota Variable Induction System)
the vvti it's their 3rd variant, after tvis and beams. did i mention, supras also come with vvti and so does the lexus is300?
and the TVIS was introduced back in late 80ies with the 4ag motors, same time as honda introduced it's vtec on the integra xsi
maybe so that toyota didn't make a motor with 240hp per liter, but at least they have more torque
just my 2 cents
and to refresh my side, i say side with the celica

I realize that this is an old thread, but.....
The celica GT is faster than the civic. No doubt about that. You're comment was pretty ignorant. Why do you own a civic EX (I'm assuming)? Why not get the SI and not settle for less?
That's like someone saying he'd rather get a kia spectra instead of a civic EX just because it's not the top of the line civic.
I say civic all the way, the celica gts is the only celica I would get.
