[hr]I've already driven an M3 fitted with BMW's newest-generation smart manual, the SMG II. This one arrives here in spring 2002, likely as a $2400 option on our M3.[hr]

i hope this thing doesnt have the same kind of lag that the auto steptronic (or whatever its called) tranny has on the current bmw's. i drove my dads one, and just wanted to see how it feels to shift that, and its got like a half a second lag before it actually shifts. compared to my friends 300M the lag is considerably less, but its still not as an instant shift like in a manual.
so hopefully the SMG II doesnt have that.
this was my fave tho:

[hr]You too Can Launch Like Ralf Schumacher!
How to activate the Acceleration Assistance:
Switch off DynamicStability Control DSC.
Select the sequential mode S6.
With the vehicle stationary, move the selector lever to the leftand hold it.
Fully depress accelerator pedal. The optimum-start engine speed (about 3500 rpm) is regulated.
As the selector lever is released, the vehicle accelerates. Keep the accelerator fully depressed — and hold on![hr]

One question, Does BMW still Void your transmission warrenty if you use the launch control more then 5 Times (yes the computer keeps track of how many times its used...) or if you leave it in Sport mode for too long?

actually ive heard of a couple people calling BMW NA and asking about this, BMW said it is not true and will not void your warrenty.
The only reason why a person might think that there is lag between shifts is because the person isn't really doing anything during that time but waiting for the shift. When driving a manual, a person has the perception of faster shifts because they are doing something between shifts.
Hope that made sense

not really steptronic, it has many characteristics of a 6spd; it's just like any actual gear box but with out a clutch.....waaaaaay faster than any steptronic. It has launch control, different shifting modes/levels i.e sport mode, and even blips the throttle automatically when dowshifting.
oh and define "keeping up" with the m3 please?

Try timing someone's shift in a manual, then time a shift in and auto, triptronic, "steptronic" etc. A lot of times the anverage manual shifts are just as long as an auto shift in certain cars, of course it varies with different trannies but you see the point.
People think the shift in an auto is long when they are used to a manual, it is all a perseption of time....I still would trade in an auto for a manual any day though. =)
