why are turbo's only an EX thing ???

i have an LX and i love my car... why does everyone say that the LX can't have turbo ?? it's a more turbo friendly engine considering that it runs on lower compression than the EX.... why can't LXer's like me bolt on an EX turbo kit ?? ( when it comes out of course..) a little bit of insight would be appriciated... =)

umm almost all of the turbos that are actually on civics right now are on lx/dx's because they have a better compression ratio for turbos than ex's.

The main difference between an EX and LX/DX is the exhaust manifold. The cat is integral with the LX/DX exhaust manifold, thus removing it to install a turbo manifold would void the smog laws.

The EX has the cat down farther in the pipe. So removing the exhaust manifold is not removing the cat.

I'm also an LXer, and I can't wait for either a turbo or a supercharger.

Turbo's don't really make sense with a VTEC. It already has a pseudo 'boost', and it would seem strange to me to interfere with it. I would go supercharger all the way if I had a vtec.

bah, I would go supercharger all the way if i could get one!

when is jackson coming out with one?! who cares about the cat!

Sorry to burst your bubble rickinthescv, but you still wouldn't pass smog even with the cat on. There is not way that a civic (or any other NA car for that matter) will pass the visual inspection with a custom turbo kit. The only cars that will pass smog with the kit on there are older civics with the Greddy kit (they come with their own CARB exempt stickers). I'm pretty sure all the info I just provided was correctm but if I'm wrong on any of this, please correct me.

From speaking to the reps at the International Auto Salon, I can tell you the reason they won't be making a kit for the Civics.

First, it was tried on an EX because of the cat location. It simply was much easier. HKS actually does have a prototype out. Maybe they will make the manifold, then you would be able to "bolt together" a turbo.

If you are referring to CARB, it stands for California Air Resources Board. California has the strictest rules in the country. And since the new Civic is an ULEV (Ultra low emissions vehicle), you cannot do much to increase emissions and still get an EO number to have it exempt, as in the previous generation Civic.

Now, HKS only got 30 horsepower boost from their kit. And it would cost over 3 grand to sell. After factoring in the cost to get it tested with the puny stock fuel system, they simply decided it was not worth it. Basically if it could be legal in CA, then it would be legal everywhere. But if not legal in CA, then why bother?

Greddy will not even try a kit, since it would be darn hard to pass smog. So all that is left to do right now is build a custom kit and have it be "race only" and take it off if you have smog tests. Or move to a more relaxed state.

so nothing like this for our cars...I thought I might keep my car after my lease is up, but now I might not. It also depends if they ever decide to bring the "R" here or not.

that is one of the most unintellegent remarks i have ever heard. your "boost" is about the same as me plucking you on the a$$. Do you even understand the point of VTEC, or what it does.

and as far as the myth of higher compression vs lower compression. everone you see in a turbo honda running 10's has 10:1 compression or higher motor.

there is a trade off between the two.
higher compression = less lag, but harder to tune
lower compression = you can boost more, make more hp (more air=more power), easier to tune, and better for a street car on street gas

a turbo will work on any motor, but i dont know of an aftermarket fuel computer that controls a 3 stage vtec. maybe you can connect the first 2 stages together.

who cares about cats, and CARBS, and ULEV f it all, just bc it says its for an ex dont mean it wont work for the lx, for example i have the EX headers from DC on my LX, if u worry about e check or what not, just save ur old exhaust setup(stock) and bolt it on if u have to go to e check.
