Hey SurrealCivic: Is that comment a joke??? Have you tried racing a 1.8T, or maybe even a 2.0L? If you have then you know that VW's can move. Granted the vehicle he is talking about is only the lowely TDI, that has under 100 horsepower (90 to be exact), and yes he should be able to smoke him like a fatty-boom-batty, but not all VW's suck.
Try your hands vs. a Corrado, or even a Scirocco(sp?), they would ruin a civic of any year or type

My best friend has a 2001 1.8T. He has a chip and an exhaust and that thing is fast. No way I can beat him in a straight line. Of course when we autocross I can beat him. I have no engine mods. Just 17 p7000 tires and dc strut bar and lower tie bar. I just ordered my konis and skunk2 coilovers. Now I will be able to smoke him. hehe Im an excellent driver.

VR-6 and 1.8T........no way......
The older jetta V-6's will give us a run for our money....prob. still take us.....
The older jetta w/ the 2.0......We'll smoke the hell out of......( I owned one)....94' w/ the 2.0.......
and the really old ones...(86-92)......w/ the 1.6......we'll take them too

I had an 86 GTI......That'll give you a run for your money...(any GTI)

For those who are beating the 150 hp 1.8T (previous years), I don't see how that is? 150 hp + 150 ft-lbs and a car that is a bit heavier. That is around high 8 second 0-60 I'm guessing. Bad driving the culprit?
The new 1.8T (tuned up to 180 hp) is quoted as a mid 7 second 0-60. A Civic EX standard is approximately a 9 second car...
the 8v motor in the jetta and the golf is dog..
my friend has a 2 door 2000 golf w/ a 8v motor, he was intake, exhaust, camshaft, valvesprings, retainers, lightened flywheel, upgraded clutch, upgraded ecu, short shfiter, and 17x8" OZ wheels w/ 225/45 Yoko Paradas...
it comes down to driver......we race all the time, and whoever gets a better launch, or who hits the shifts better comes out the winner.....the cars a pretty much dead even, although he has a nice amount of low end torque, which makes the car nicer to drive

I have race a jetta a couple of times and all three times I bet it. it was a 2.0 owned by my uncle. The first time we went from a rolling start we were about equal all the way but I started to pull away. The other two times we were at a stop light and i just got a better start and just keep pulling away.

The TDI does 0-60 in 12 sec.
The 2.0 does it in 10.4
This is the new ones... (Jetta/Golf IV). I know these numbers because I was looking at buying one, and they were just too slow.
If you can't beat that in a Civic, you need to learn to drive.

It also depends on what year 1.8t. I looked into getting a used one before i got the civic. Pre 2002 they only had 150 hp, after they have 181.[hr]

but comparing with the 2.0 liters, i've raced several and beat them pretty horribly.
