can't go wrong with any honda/acura, car value when selling will be much higher than any other american car. Reliability of an import is also much better than most of the cars on the market of course considering the price range shes looking at

Go with Corolla... be smart.
It's only the #1 rated economy car right now. Our Civics were last yera's champ... but the new Corolla is faster, more torque, better handling, better brakes, better ride, better construction, quieter, more comfortable and even more reliable. Not to mention better headlamps, more expensive interior, lower interest rates... yada yada yada.
Need I say more? I didn't think so.
But then again, you can't go wrong with a Civic either. It's a nice car to have, if she ever wants to soup it up. If souping up is her thing. Otherwise, I'd go with a Corolla.

If you're looking for another car, though, do like everyone else said and go foreign. Toyota, Honda/Acura, or Nissan. You/she will not be let down there. VeeDub's are okay, just watch out for the mileage, for some reason ppl love to run up tons of miles on those. Most have crank windows and regular door locks, but strangely, almost all also have a power sunroof
EDIT: O1Coupe has a good pointer though... If she can deal with a small sized sedan, the Corolla would def be the pic! Two things that I can def agree with is that they get unbeatable gas mileage for the engine size and they don't understand the meaning of the phrase "In the shop." He had other good points peticularly about the 2003+, but ALL Corolla's will get the job done with amazing quality backing them up. The Chevy/Geo name isn't usually associated with quality, but the Prizm is under the same deal as the Matrix/Vibe right now. SAME car, different styling and badging. Both the Matrix/Vibe and Corolla/Prizm are a joined operation between Toyota and GM. So keep an eye out for the Prizm too(you can probably get THIS car even cheaper than the Corolla simply because of the name, but trust me, they ARE the exact same car )
