It's not noticeable at all in a SOHC engine, maybe not even in a DOHC engine. Also search and you will find many topics dealing with VTEC in our cars.

If the i-VTEC in the type S is anything like the VVTL-i in my celica, believe me, you will feel it. VVTL-i kicks in at 6000 and it goes.

yea, just like i "feel" it in my more powerful then stock DOHC B16 VTEC. Then again, i can "feel' when an ant is crawling on my arm, doesnt mean theres much to it. you want to "feel" something, get some torque. and no ~130 ft lbs isnt going to cut it.

Well, lets put it this way, when lift kicks in on my car, I can definetely feel it. Its not something thats going to pin you in your seat, but its noticable.

OK...isn't the VTEC-E system in our cars variable? I can definitely feel the changeover to the more aggressive lobes but it seems to depend on throttle actuation.
If I'm taking it easy and shifting at 4000-4500 rpm, the changeover occurs just above 4000rpm. If I shift at redline, it occurs at around 5000 rpm.

Has anyone else noticede this, or am I hallucinating here? I think it's pretty obvious, just as when you switch to a wilder cam on a non-VTEC car--you will feel the difference.
Whether that difference is a marked increase in road torque is another matter but VTEC activation is definitely not transparent.

I dotn think there's a aftermarket vtec....who ever told you take didnt know what their talking about.....You can get a vtec controller which will make a big difference,I dont know about the 2k's or the 2k1's but the 2k2's vtec comes on at 3900rpm....with the controller you can adjust your air flow and fuel flow also

Well actually if I am not mistaken, the Vtec kicks in around 4200rpms. And I will say, if you can not feel it then you will definately notice it. Notice what you Tach does around 4000 rpms. The needle will move a considerable amount faster.

whoever said that i "kicks in" around 4200 is right....ive heard between 4200 and 4400. my dealer told me 4400 and i can notice it around there as well, it is not as noticable as say a slap in the face but its there. a friend of my has a GS-R and that kicks in around 5600 and when it does it jumps you can really feel that take off, but i wouldn't get too excited about a sohc vtec too much.

A Type S' engagement is 5800rpm and at 6k you can hear the cam switch from the mild to wild profile and you can feel it contary to what ppl say it isnt a hard kick but it is noticiable.
