I am a little confused about VW
Why would anybody get a VW?
from the numbers, they don't seem great in performance and they always seem to be a couple grand more that you would expect.
I was reading that a GTI (337 6 speed) would really beat a Civic SI?
GTI = 180 HP
SI = 160 HP
would it 'really beat' a Civic Si?
GTI = 22,700
SI = 19,400
big price difference.
A RSX-S is 23,600 and it has 200 HP !!
why would someone get a little more performance for that much more money?
you find the same for the Jetta.
with the Passat; you could get almost twice the HP with 5K more on the Audi A6
Now the Golf R32 (241 HP) is more like it. but will certainly be closer to 30K than 25K. Which brings me back to the same question.
I just don't get it

vw's look nice and have very, very, nice interiors. However, their reliability ratings are poor. I wouldn't buy one for a long term vehicle unless it came with an extended warranty. I think the golf gl has a decent rating but that's about it for the entire line.
GTI's are fast. just as fast if as RSX S's
even tho tehy have 20 less horses
and when people wanna race u thinking ur slow, u can kick their ***.
my friend has a GTI and he ran a 14.8 1/4mile before at the track. he's beaten 2 WRX's from rolling start. from stand still teh wrx would kill it with 4wd
but from rolling he actually beat them.
for my next car i would really consider a VW

Ahhhh...Torque....
I see now.
So the only thing that they got bad going for them is their reliability?
They still seem overpriced to me; especially if they are not reliable.
Their interiors better be really nice for the prices.
BTW: there is no such thing as a Jetta gti. It is just a GTI.

i dunno man....
the GTI 1.8T with the chip and exhuast its pretty dang fast if u ask me
its got torque. maybe both of u guys wont leave each other. just neck by neck the whole time.
its a drivers race if u ask me. i havent tried it since its not my car (vr6).

So really a GTI VR6 would beat a RSX-S.
they both ahve 200 HP and are both 22-23K
BUT the GTI has more Torque.
And just to further clarify. A GTI 1.8T would be equal to a RSX-S
The light above my head is warming up...

huh the old vr 6 is 174 and the new vr6 is like 220 or 240 i dunno. some one might wanna correct me.
but still the new GTI with the VR6 is gonna be a killer ride next year.
yea im kinda waiting to see how the new R performs
it doesnt matter if its a long race the RSXS will catch up and hopefully beat it.
it doesnt matter both cars are really good and evened out its all in the eyes of the driver i guess!

I was gonna get a 2002 Jetta VR6 before I even considered getting a Civic. This VW dealer had a good deal on the 172hp version (to make room the the newer more powerful VR6). It was $20,500 (listed for about $25,500). By the time I decided to go for it (2 days time), it was gone. Damn... Looking back though I'm kind of lucky, my brother has a 98 Golf and within three years his transmission was shot. Luckily it was still under warranty.

Well, I dunno, maybe I was just lucky but I have owned many VWs, and a couple Audis...reliable as, well, a Honda
. Seriously, I never had any problems, even after modifying them with i/h/e/, cams, chip, etc.
As for their power delivery, one word: TORQUE
Ever wonder how it is possible for a "150hp" 1.8T car to beat other higher powered cars? A broad torque curve attained at relatively low rpm's, that's how. This is the philosophy at Audi, BMW, Porsche, et al. Europeans have been both blessed and cursed by the high cost of gasoline (petrol, to them), so they've had to develop more fuel-efficient and lighter engines which still retain good torque characteristics.
Honda, on the other hand, has also done the same but has traditionally relied on high-strung, high-revving engines to make power. This is why Hondas can squeeze lots of hp from small displacement motors but relatively low torque figures, especially compared to European cars.
Just a difference in engineering philosophy, which, IMO, makes for more interesting cars.

I would consider them a little more higher-end...I've ridden in a 1.8T and it's comfortable, has ample power, and is a nice size...And about reliability, they have had their problems in the past, but VW's line of cars is making a comeback especially with the later models. There's a reason why they have a good customer base - it's fun to drive as well! I would get one if I could afford the maintainance, but for now, I'll deal with my little DX..

price = demand
vw's sell. there is demand. therefor the price is high.
They are good looking cars.
They are european cars.
Most of the market does not look at horsepower or torque or watever. Most are not into mods. They feel that by mod'ing the car they are 'ruining' it with aftermarket parts when really the factory engineers who know the most about the car since they designed it and probably put in the best fitting, best suited parts for the car. (thats the way i felt before i started getting into mods). They want image. They want the car to *look good* stock. We are a minority (although growing quickly). We look at specs, hp, torque, number of available mods, etc...
VW's line looks good/sporty, feels solid when u drive it (not like a paperweight or 'toy' like the civic does), fun to drive, and has a a 'fun sporty" type of image to it. The civic has a 'economy gas milage family car' image to it. At least the sedan anyway - it looks it too. Either that, or it has a 'ricer' image to it. People don't just buy the car, they buy the image.
Im not saying civics are bad. I obviously have one. And I also have a VW. When i got my civic i admit it took a little getting used to. It felt very "toy"like in the beginning. But now I enjoy driving my civic very much. To compare the two I guess I would name my civic "pepe" and my VW "bruno". In my opinion, BOTH are overpriced. For the civic's class of vehicle (lancer, corolla/tercel, protege, elantra, sentra, neon, focus, golf....) the civic is one of the MOST expensive. I think Jetta is different class of vehicle (altima, 626).

Don't forget also, that many VW owners "chip" their cars.
Meaning they buy aftermarket ECU's ($200-$300) which easily increase both their horsepower and torque. Their stock engines have sh*tloads of untapped power, and are very easy to chip without any problems.
A 1.8T engines usually pushes over 200 HP after it's been chipped. And when you couple that with their naturally high torque, you have a car which can easily take on an RSX-s.
And ya, like someone above said, their interiors are VERY nice, compared with other cars in its class.
One thing about VW's though, is that they have some of the worst power windows in existence, and their interiors creak and rattle more than almost any other car.

trust me, the 1.8T has more potential to mod than the Civic....it's a turbo engine and can gain HP easier than NA car. and there's something called changed the ECU. my friend changed the stock one to the Upsolute Chip and he gained 50HP from 150HP -> 200HP and 200 Torque. then he added other goodies and now i think he's at 220-230HP range. and REMEMBER, VW can give you all their power and torque at very low RPM but our Civic or VTech wont kick in until you pass 6000rpm.
For the VR6: they are coming out with the DOHC VR6 and pumps out 230HP range and they might throw in the 4Motions system to make the car handle better. so what you pay is what you guess....and most VW comes with leather, traction control, sunroofs, 8 speakers sound system, bigger rims and better choice of tires...etc (that's why the price is higher)
Civic is good car (i have one too) but it's just very hard to compare to a car that is meant for speed. it gets me from point A to B and cheaper on insurance than GTi or Jetta 1.8 or VR and that's good enough for the money i paid for my civic.

I can get a GTi 1.8T for $20K. I can get a civic Si for $19K.
The Gti will run 15.0 in the 1/4 mi. STOCK
The Si will run mid-high 15's STOCK
"chip" the GTi and say goodbye to the RSX-S
Trust me, it's worth the extra money.
And for reliability, they are as good as Honda IMO.

VW does make good-looking, smooth, powerful cars, but their main weakness is their reliability. Out of the 7 largest car manufacturers in the world, VW consistently ranks last, according to JD Powers. Toyota and Honda are ranked 1 and 2, by a large margin.
If VW had the reliability of Honda, I would be driving a VW right now.

It's possible - someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the chip sets new parameters for torque and horsepower - otherwise, it's power output is governed through the chip...
