So my brother has lived in Canada for the last couple years and finally decided to move back. He has a car that he bought and is going to sell back in Canada. I'm wondering if I could buy it here in USA and what the process is for registering it in America. What are the fees, what would the paperwork be and would it be worth the hassle. It isn't the nicest car (toyota corolla) but I know they are reliable and think I would get a good deal.

Re: Importing a car from canada.
not a mechanical problem, not a civic even, moving to proper section of the forums

Canadian cars are living in salt for half of the year, the local price is higher than US - When i went there for a year and half, the prices for my 2002 civic was 2-3k higher than US around 2010
not worth it

How old is the corolla? Got any info on it (mileage, condition, etc)? What province is it coming from?

Re: Importing a car from canada.
What i did at the time was take my civic there and bring it back, under the condition that i would need to bring it back whatever the condition it was (even totaled) in order to pay lower fees. So my case was different.
I had also have to install DRL on it (Canadian laws - US laws are less stringent) - luckly hondas cleared the child seat rules in Canada, My Mazda Miata did not, even if I don't have child, but if i sold to someone else it would be a problem in Canada.
Canadian cars also tend to have larger windshield washer tanks for obvious reasons (when you see the windshield washer with antifreeze literally freeze on your windshield instantly...)

quick google gives these (mind you, rules and laws change, this might change overtime. you could have gotten to these by yourself if you have googled yourself too...)
typical fees are 2.5% of car value, plus the fees for the docs.
your brother likely will get more money by selling locally.

Yeah, I wouldn’t bother. Ontario isn’t a great place to import cars from.

huh, it's already past the border? He have 365 days since the day he crossed the border (day included) to legalize the situation
not sure how much the crazy car prices would affect (US is just not rational), but usually you can buy same car in US for better prices than Canada, so having sold it there would have been better in the end...
