Timing Belt or Chain

What year did Honda switch to a timing chain on the Civics? I’ve been debating on putting a new motor in my car, if one of the ones with a timing chain would work in a 01 Civic LX with a 5 speed.

Thanks

Re: Timing Belt or Chain

Not to dissuade your idea, but the cost of a powertrain swap and everything that has to go along with it could pay for many, many timing belt jobs.
And a head gasket job.

I think replacing a timing belt every 7 years/100,000 miles is pretty easy and cheap maintenance.
The timing belt itself is something like 37 bucks list from Honda.

A K swap (K20, Civic SI style) is not exactly cheap, and those engines can still eat up timing chains if the oil is neglected.
I can tell you that's one hell of a tight mess trying to replace chains when that engine is stuffed into a Civic.

I’m just looking into options because I know I got a head gasket issue, but wouldn’t be surprised if the head is warped to bad to resurface. Plus there are other issues with my car, so I’ve been thinking of buying something else also. Just feeling around for what might be my best option.

Thanks

Re: Timing Belt or Chain

It would have to be really bad to be beyond machining limits and really need replaced.

I think it may be, that’s why I’m looking into engine ideas. I’d rather put my money towards something that is going to help out in the long run instead of trying fix an engine that may cost more to fix than its worth.

Thanks

Re: Timing Belt or Chain

Cheapest option will be to find another D17. Do the timing belt and head gasket while it’s out of the car. Only other engine that can fit reasonably easily would be a k series but will cost a few thousand and take some time.

Re: Timing Belt or Chain

Would the K series mount to my existing transmission? Thanks for your input.

Nope! No way no how.

The only way to K swap is to transplant the entire drivetrain
And the K engine would be on the passengers side of the car. Right now your D17 engine is on the drivers side of the car.
