tragic death
I really could care less about your personal opinion regarding me being a "typical a$$hole cop." Yeah, I guess I am if when I hit my strobes and siren I expect someone to stop. Hey, it's only the law and I expect everyone to follow it. It's not an option as to whether or not the person wants to stop. You need to learn how to carefully read people's posts. I said a person would end up in an "*** pound prison" if they ran from me. I really don't care about simple speeding under NYS VTL 1180(a). I do not issue summonses for that unless the person gives me a reason to. I will usually stop the car, introduce myself (something that almost no one does) and say why I stopped the driver. My conversation is friendly and informal. This is all assuming the person stops when I light them up.
You don't ride in my car with me (I work alone), nor are you on my squad (to my knowledge). Don't tell me my job or tell me that I am putting innocent people in danger. I have been trained to make split second decisions and I can react faster than someone who does not have my training. I am emergency vehicle operator certified which means that I know how to maneuver a vehicle in emergency situations. It was not a 12 hour driving course; it was the result of seven months of training. Don't imply that I don't know how to do my job. You've never seen my record, so don't attempt to profile me as a "young testosterone riddled officer."
Your comments are nothing but a generalization and are unfounded.

im curious... would all you people be saying the same thing if he had gotten into his car drunk and killed himself? some thougth what i said earlier was mean, but i honestly think that they are basically the same.
if you go into a car and choose to drive 120 mph, and kill yourself, you are as foolish as the drunkard who gets into his car and cant drive down teh street without hitting a mailbox.
and the ppl that gotten in with him should have said something, or known he was gonna drive fast. you dont get into a car whre the driver is drunk.
he was driving fast and, it cost him his life. a lost life is always tragic, but will get no sympathy from me. I am glad that it was not worse, he could have killed his passengers, or worse, other people!

<< QCKSILVR, your crown vic interceptor package isn't very souped up....
There have been numerous tests where the interceptor CV is actually slower than the civilian CV due to the crappy aerodynamics with the lightbar and the TON of extra equipment, including the beefed up suspension. In fact, the suspension is the most "souped up" thing about the car.....there are very few engine mods. If you've pulled over porches and ferraris, i can tell you that its not because you outran them, its because they stopped due to common sense and intelligence....and/or a police helicopter on their ***.
BTW, at first you seemed pretty cool, but to me you're starting to sound more and more like a typical a$$hole cop. I dont know, i think police should have a maximum term of service...after that they should be automatically retired because they seem to turn bitter due to all the crap they take. Being an officer is an ego trip, and i hope its not getting to you. Everyone is NOT a criminal, and not everyone just speeds because they think they're "fast and furious." Hopefully you take extenuating circumstances into account before you send people off to "*** pounding prisons" for exceeding the speed limit. Personally, i believe that i am a good driver (as does everyone) and i do speed, but only speed when i have a good reason to.
Also, during your high-speed chases where "no one has gotten away" from you, hopefully you take into account the danger that you're placing other innocent civilians in as well. In my city, chases are left up to the helicopter, not young testosterone-riddled officers who are determined not to break their perfect record. This technique is obviously the more safe and intelligent approach.....and generally more effective as well.

Obviously you didn't read his posts well - be careful before you climb on someone's back. And yes, we all speed - but if you get pulled over, the law's the law. I'm not saying it's necessarily just or fair, but it's a law. I'm pretty sure a cop would take into consideration extenuating circumstances, like a medical emergency or something of that kind, but I'm not so sure other reasons would fly (i.e., being late to work). QCKSILVR is just doing is job, and it's obvious that he's trained well to do it. From all his other posts he's more than helpful and a pretty cool guy...Read before you type!

thanks for the sympathy... those of you who gave it.
yes, he was stupid to drive so fast and his friends may have been stupid not to tell him to slow the hell down but no matter what, it is a shame that a 16 year old is dead and i can't believe anyone would say they're glad he's dead and that he got what he deserved. it does show irresponsibility on his part just like a drunk driver, i agree.
i guess what i wanted people to get out of this was to think twice before you do what he was doing and try to show off in your car or in any other dangerous stupid situation. its not worth it. the civic may be the safest small car on the market but nothing is rated to 125 mph.
as for blaming his parents, they did all they could by supplying him with one of the safest cars on the market. he was 16 years old, almost an adult, and prefectly able to make decisions for himself. i accept that it was by and far his fault but that doesn't make his death any less tragic or sad.

thats too bad Best wishes to Him and the Family... I agree with some of the others we should all take a stunt driving course or some high speed course is imposed when u turn 17 or sumptin. I drive 4 to 6 hours a day and that expierence changes a person !!!

it is a shame that he is dead, and i dont think anyone is glad he is dead. there was an idiot at my highschool. annoying as hell. noone liked him. one week he started to be real cool, he wasnt all anoying, you could talk to him. the end of teh week he shot himself in the head using a family rifle.
noone was GLAD he was dead, just like noone is glad this person is.
but he did get exactly what he deserved. he sped, he knew he was speeding, and he knew it was dangerous. and he got caught.

while i do agree crown vic interceptors arent as fast as a good porsche, quik doesnt seem like an a-hole to me. i do agree with the fact that a guy determined to run in a ferrari can get away cause you dont throw out spike stirps when the suspect is going 180+ mph. police helicopters might get him tho, but their sight is limited. remember that there is always the possibility to evade cops.

Are you kidding me?? I agree his death is a tragedy, but 16 yrs old is nowhere near an adult and from my experience (when I was 16 yrs old and behind a wheel), the vast majority of 16 yr olds don't know WTF they're doing when they're driving. I don't know about other states, but in Texas you have to be 16 to even obtain a license. So those 16 yr old Texans you see driving around have less than one year of experience driving a car and are a significantly high risk for accidents.
The insurance actuarial statistics prove this, and that's why insurance is so freaking expensive for a 16 yr old. Every time I see a thread entitled "Hey I'm 16 yrs old, I just got my third ticket, what do I do??" I just think in my head, "Dude, you are fvcked..."
Given that more numbers of 16 yr olds (a much larger proportion than say, adults aged 23-25) tend to act in the manner as your friend (driving at insanely high speeds with passengers in their car), I am all in favor of laws that restrict driving privileges for young teenagers until they have proven that they are safe drivers. I know there are some states that give gradual license benefits based on how long you've been driving and how few accidents you've had.
Wow, I can't beleive anybody would say that a sixteen year old deserved to die, no matter what kind of stupid decision he was making. I'm sure nobody here can honestly say that they've never done anything stupid even though they knew it was dangerous. Regardless, nobody deserves to die over a stupid decision. That kid had a whole life ahead of him and now it's gone. I hope whoever said he deserved it feels like crap.

The 16yr old kid did not get what he deserved. He was speeding excessively and it carries a great risk. Hauling *** isn't a reason for anyone to deserve the loss of his life.
I most certainly do not agree with the police chasing people on public roads. They say these people are endangering innocent people's lives but they are the ones that chase them for miles. If you ask me, they are both endangering everyone's lives.

A 16 year old in my state can not hold a full, Class D (unrestricted) driver's license. Learner permits are issued to 16 year olds, which require a licensed, supervising adult. A 16 year old can also obtain a restricted class DJ junior license, however, most people tend regard it as a full license (I know I did when I was 16).
I don't think any 16 year old deserves to die. I know I exercised many, many poor decisions as a 16 year old; many 16 years olds do not have good decsion making skills.

qcksilvr, i didn't know all that about the different types of licenses. thanks for the info. i think in FL its all pretty much the same. i think it is smart though to increase testing, teaching, and even the age limit for driving. the accident and insurance stats do speak pretty well for themselves.
and i know he was only 16 and that is a VERY young and immature age, especially for males. what i was saying is that it was his decision to speed, not his parents'. i'm sure his parents told him not to speed and act stupid. i'm almost 20 and mine still tell me that all the time and i still drive 80 on the interstate and 50+ in town. my parents told me not ever to smoke and i did. they told me not to skip school and i did.
what my point is, is that it was HIS decision and i just don't buy it when people blame parents for their children's decisions (not that anyone is blaming his parents, i'm just clarifying what i said about him being able to make his own decisions).

I believe most states, if not all follow the same classification system. A class "D" or class "5" license, to my knowledge, means full, unrestricted license for operation of a regular passenger auto.

Dude, dont get your **** in a knot. I respect the job that police do. I respect the authority when i am in contact with it. I respect your knowledge of the law, and you DO seem more reasonable than many of the police that i've had contact with. I'm basing my comments on what you yourself have said on this forum so while they ARE just opinions, they are NOT quite unfounded. However, clearly you already have the opinion that you are beyond reproach, so i'll drop it.

ny: 16 permit, 17 junior license (or senior with drivers ed). 18 senior.
Pretty much correct, however:
Age 16-Class DJ Learner Permit. Permits supervised operation by a Class D (or equivalent) license holder over the age of 18. May not drive anywhere in New York City.
Age 16-With an MV-287 (5 hour pre-licensing course) -Class DJ Junior Driver License with successful completion of a road test. Permits unsupervised operation to or from a place of employment between the hours of 5 AM-9 PM in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Permits unsupervised operation 5 AM - 9 PM in any other locality besides NYC. Anything else requires supervised operation.
Age 17-With an MV-285 (Driver Education Certificate of Completion)-Will become a Class D, unrestricted driver license if a road test has been passed already and the operator is a Class DJ license holder, or will allow conversion of a Class DJ learner permit to a Class D license with successful completion of a road test.
Age 18-Road test necessary for a license at this point if subject still holds a permit and has not taken any driver ed courses.
Anyone driving in New York City must hold a valid, class D license.
The most popular misconception is that a Class DJ driver license (age 16) is an unrestricted license. They are identical to a regular
license, except that under "class" it says: DJ. Many cops do not even look at this. I do note it, however, I never issue summonses on
it as I drove all over the place on a junior license at 16.

im sorry. Lots of people i know speed excessive and ask why i don't do it in my civ. now i could just send them this thread and they will slow their butts down. I've been in 5 wrecks the past two yrs., and one of them i got hurt alot and speed was involved but i wasn't driving. Speeding excessivly and drunk driving really make me mad.

I gauge my speed on the known variables...less traffic tend to go a bit faster. If I have someone in the car with me I have enough respect to keep it as safe as I can.
If I get into an accident I don't want to take anyone with me. Even so I rarely and by rarely I mean maybe once a year hit 100mph in my car...I know the roads where I live enough to avoid dips, bumps and anything that will throw the weight and balance off in my car when I am driving. I do it even when going with traffic.
Still I have no sypethy for dopes who wreck their cars being stupid. I feel stupid for the innocent people, and even more sorry for the people that have to scrape him off the pavement.

This is proof that too many people dont appreciate what they have. If he would have worked his *** off for that car like some people are forced to, I guarentee you that things would not have ended up this way. Regardless, hope his friends and family are making it through this all.
I think the lesson here is that people must learn to know their capabilities and limits...and the limits of the car also...
an unexperienced driver(not neccesarly a teen) shouldn't be driving that fast...people must use common sense and drive according to their capabilities and don't forget that conditions of the road(water, sand, condition of the asphalt or concrete and temperature) also affect the car's behavior...if you exceed your limits your risking yourself of going out of control and endagering innocent people...even the proffesionally trained can have accident if proper safety is not addressed..
BE SAFE even if you're not exceeding traffic laws. Just my 2 cents.

NOONE should EVER be driving that fast. no matter what, you are endangering yourself, and the lives of the people around you. and this young gentleman has just added his name to the many people who prove this exact point.
i asked this before in another thread (several times) i will bring it up again. what is the rush? you get there when you get there, enjoy the ride!
First off, my deepest sympathy goes out to the parents and family of the deceased. While I agree it was a very un-intelligent decision to be driving that fast, such a tragedy should never befall anyone, especially someone of such a young age. As many others have said, this should be a lesson to the rest of us:
Slow down and use your road sense. - The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia.
Qcksilvr, I want to thank you for all your information, in this thread and the many others you have contributed to. While some might not appreciate your efforts, I - and many other members of this site - certainly do. I believe you do your job very well, and you seem to be an excellent member of the law enforcement community.
And to those of you who insist of dis-obeying trafic laws, such as speeding - myself included, I'm afraid, remember that you'll only get away with it for so long, before you end up in an "a$$ pound prison" or worse. And instead of trying to AVOID the cops, which seems to be a popular idea, why not instead follow the advice of Jim Carrey:
"STOP BREAKING THE LAW, @$$-HOLE!!! - Liar Liar
That's all I have to say on this topic, and I pray for the soul of our lost brother, may he rest in peace ..

WhiteRabit...exactly. Like our summons officers say--"everyone is in a rush to go nowhere."
BlueFlame, thank you, I appreciate your comments. You certainly have a good handle on reality, in my opinion, and are right on the mark in that people only get away with things before it catches up to them--a summons, or worse, serious personal injury/death.

I cruise from 140-150km/h everyday on the highway (commute). Who cares? We've all run into our speed limiters for the thrill of it anyway. **** happens, people die, so get over it. Why do we let people smoke? Smoking kills more than traffic accidents. Are you going to say a smoker who died from lung cancer 'deserved to die'. There sure are a bunch of rednecks on this site with twisted values and ethics.
