Learn about cars

Aside from How Stuff Works, Google, this forum and experience what can you recommend for learning about cars? I'm already a mechanic (not auto before you freak out) so doing work isn't difficult. I want to learn more about all the different systems, their parts and how they work. I'd prefer a book. Something I can enjoy on the jon as well as be a useful learning tool in the shop. A textbook type reference seems like it would be best. Any recommendations?

Re: Learn about cars

best way to learn is by working on a car. so if you have something that needs some attention i'd suggest buying the haynes manual for that model. the haynes manuals pretty much walk you through the whole car and by doing it by hand you learn the small things that make a job a lot quicker and easier.

Re: Learn about cars

yep.. I concur with the above. I've been tinkering with my Civic since I got her back in 2002. I learned how to work on cars thanks to this forum and the Haynes manual I bought at Autozone a while back.

I, too, was a mechanic by trade a while back when I joined the Navy as a mechanic for nuclear power plants. It's not the same as working on cars by any means, but I was still able to apply what I learned to being my own auto mechanic.

Re: Learn about cars

I know working on the car is definitely the best way to learn. I was just curious if any knew of a good book that consolidated all the systems well. Sometimes taking something apart and putting it back together will still leave holes in your knowledge. Blythe way, I'm a Nuke too.

I just take my car apart, and hope that it all goes back together some how.

and have parts left enough to assemble a robot afterwards

the best motivation is really to troubleshoot something. it's hard to keep your full attention for a whole book. and believe us, it's gonna happen. unless you get a new car every year

Re: Learn about cars

Best way is to keep working on them. Work with someone who knows more about cars than you

Re: Learn about cars

maximum boost by corky bell is a great book on boosting cars.

If you really want to learn, find an automotive engineering textbook, I have 3 downloaded and they each are 800+ pages long... Soooooooo much information
