Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
I'm just gonna see if I can get a discussion going here... I commute in my civic, and realistically I'm going to be replacing it with a brand new car in the next 1-2 years. Its getting up there in kms (190k). I want a RWD sports coupe and I'm torn between the FR-S and the Genesis. Both are great looking cars, the 2013 genesis is going to push ~270hp in a 2.0T which is the model I'd get but weighs ~600lbs more than the FR-s which pushes around 200 hp in an N/A flat 4.
Tell me what you think. Which car do you think is better, and why?

Neither, as a daily. Turbos are nice, but most require premium gas and aren't as bulletproof as NA. Flat fours are more of a pain to work on, go find a Subie owner and talk about diy maintenance and upgrades. But if I had to choose, I'd get the Subaru BRZ, because the Scion suspension setup is softer.

genesis - durability is still unknown?
Scion - i just don't like toyota, aside from some models...
do you have RWD experience, Tom? they could be handful in the snow.

Yes I have RWD experience.
I'm leaning towards the FR-S even though it's a flat 4 anyway. Though I don't know how hard they are to work on, I'll have to do some research on that. I think Hyundai reliability may have improved a lot over the past few years but I won't know until the cars age.

Hmm... I'm all for the Subaru version but it's going to be way more expensive here in Canada than the Scion version! hmm... Maybe I'll just get the Civic Si.

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
I should go back and find those posts where you insisted you would never buy a new car again, because you have the depreciation.
My opinion..
I wouldn't touch the Genesis, partly because it's a Hyundai and I still don't have a ton of faith in the brand, but because it's a turbo car and you commute.
The FRS and BRZ I like, but there will be classic design flaws with the early years of new models, so I guess it depends when you want to buy. Max is write too, flat engines are a bitch.
What would I buy?
I'd pick up a low mile AP2 with a hardtop, hands down, not even a thought.
240hp N/A, decent MPG, a gearbox that will make you smile every time you shift, Honda reliability, RWD like you want, awesome performance car in stock form, the price has somewhat reached a plateau like the NSX so you won't be killed by depreciation. It's small, but if it's just you 95% of the time that shouldn't be too bad, the Edge is your primary family time car.
I'd also throw the Fait Abarth into the running as a fun, efficient car. 160hp turbo engine, but the car is so light.

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
Hmm... I need to check AP2 prices but if im spending ~15k I want a warranty... I know depreciation is a bitch and I have complained about it in the past however I made out really well buying my civic brand new. I haven't made a payment in over 2 years and it's a treat once its paid off. So, I guess i want a new car thats going to last me 8-10 years like my EM2 has

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
AP2 is just about out of the question. Hard tops are hard to find for one, for two anything with less than 30k kms here is hovering between 25-30k in price. Not only that, interest rate is higher on used cars and they are 2008 or older. Fine if it's not a commuter car, but the s2000 isnt ideal. However, if I take my time and find one priced to sell, that may be a different story. Time, I have
.. but damn i like the FR-S. Civic Si is quickly moving up my list.. K24 mmmm.
Best I've found so far:

Until I realized its a 2003.

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
Wait a year for the BRZ turbo version to drop! Then you get closer to the power of the genesis with the reliability of a Subaru/Toyota.
I'm so stoked for the BRZ/FR-S!

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
BR-Z turbo is fine fi you have 40k+ to drop.. which I don't intend to do
After taxes here in Canada its going to be well over 40k!!! Mmmm... I would LOVE that car though.

Ever thought of the WRX? I'm personally a big fan of the previous gen STi's (before the fugly 2012's came out), and it's kind of RWD, I guess lol...just throwin that one out there...but otherwise, the Si is still a damn great car that comes with Honda reliability you know
Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
I'd still go with the FR-S or base BRZ though. Those are gonna be such great cars.

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
Yea. I think the BRZ is at ~40000 base here in Canada... Bah, I'd love to get it though. The FR-S should be quite a bit cheaper.

Re: Genesis Coupe or Scion FR-S?
Tom,
I told MB in another place, but another option is finding a cheap miata (like i did).
They have the double wishbone suspension, camber/caster/toe excentric bolts adjustment from factory, 50/50 weight distribution, millions of them on the roads, torsen LSD options from factory, and fairly cheap compared to the S2k (also, less peaky engines).
The suspension mods need to be very carefully choosen (miriads of options, ranging from 300 to 3000, i could help you with them, though).
If you get tired of the engine, well, there's always the LS conversion kits form Flyin' Miata
or their turbo/compressor kits
MPG is worse than vics, though... mine is around 27-28 regular driving... 33 HWY, against 30-33 regular 44 MPG HWY... Miatas are not too aerodinamic as it appears... windshield is standing too high angle, for example...
