Hi there.
Im in the market for a new car, preferably another civic.
I came across this,http://manitoba.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...AdIdZ336062501
Boosted 2000 civic SIR, Guys owned it since summer, bought it off his buddy, had a shop here in winnipeg do the turbo, was tuned to aggresive without a conservative tube so he blew the stock b16, swapped another b16, street tuned it with a conservative tube, then sold it to the owner here who is now selling it, it is NOT saftied, im not sure if you americans know what that is, but it seems like he wont safety it and doesnt want to. He's selling it due to another project, he has another SIR with a b16, b18 head, turboed already. I went to take a look at the car, MINT, NO rust, No dings, Drives nice, Spools nice, Needs another tune do to putting bigger injectors on it, Runs rich so the idle bounces up and down. Needs a wheel bearing as well.
What do you guys think? im 17, part time job, i dont want to buy this and have a HUGE headache to deal with. Hes running it at 10 psi, i would run around 5 for winter.
Anyways what do you guys think? Give me you're opinions!
thanks very much!

okay, safety is a candian thing, Cars need to be "safetied" to be insured, you bring the car in for safety check, they check struts, ball joints, headlights, horn, axles, window washers, tires, you get what i mean, Buying the car not safetied means you can be putting quite a bit to just get it on the road.

You should get a safety check first then.Don't want to be driving with a car without insurance

I would have it safety checked also..he does not want to do it cause there is something wrong that would fail probly..Its hard when buying boosted cars..you never know how they were treated(actually treated no what they say). There could be no problems or a lot of problems..If something seems to good to be true it usually is..Im not saying not to get it but i would at least have a mechanic look at it first..most places will do a courtesy check for free..

When you register a car in canada it has to be safety tested and emissions tested. The safety only lasts 30 days before it has to be done again, but once it's done you never have to do it again unless you sell it and the new buyer wants it saftied before buying it. E-test is done every 1-2 years. Both of these have to be completed before you can get insurance and register the car under your name.

I'm not sure how a safety check is done on vehicles that have aftermaket turbos though... Tell him that you're interested, but only if it comes saefty and e-tested. You don't want to have to buy the car and then put a lot of money into it just to be able to insure it and register. If you have a mechanic, get him to look it over also because he'll also know things to look out for when it comes to getting it safetied.
If he gives you any trouble trying to get it checked, then you know it has something wrong with it.

Oh and 130k isn't that bad. Thats what, 81k miles?
Though it is 130k on the new engine, 220k on the body. You'll be due for a timing belt soon. Thats pretty high for body km.
Also, the fact that he's dropped the price means nobodies been buying it. There must be a reason to that too.

Re: Need advice on buying a Boosted SIR.
I understand the temptation of buying a boost car; the sight of the intercooler, the sound of the blow of valve, the power. However, buying a car is one of the times where you need to throw emotions out the window and look at it strictly from an investment stand point.

Buying a modified car is a massive risk as they have almost always been severely abused by the previous owner, the quality of the parts used is always questionable, the quality of the install is questionable and so on. For that reason, unless you are extremely experienced with mechanics and have the knowledge to recognize the quality of the parts and things that will need to be replaced, upgraded, redone you shouldn't even consider it. With all honesty, at your age, you do not sound like you have that experience.

Now, that all said and it being a modified car aside, the engines blown up once due to a bad tune and it has no safety. That tells me the car will be a massive money pit, it's definitely been abused and it's going to cost some cash to get it up to safety specs. Run. Run very fast from this car.

really bad idea to buy a boosted car, esp if youre only 17 with part time job. you will hate yourself later when the car keeps falling apart every week. you need a reliable n/a car that was taken care of. most hondas before 2001 will go forever if they are taken care of.
