Honda Generations, Brochures, suspension info and links - reference

Warning! Do not post questions, rather post contributions. A thread with 100 pages with only questions does not serve as reference to anyone.

First off, the funniest thing is that i started this as i was looking for information in the suspension for the other reference thread, and remembered the other guy asking for specs on a rare canadian version - i had found a brochure that listed it. So i decided to find some more brochures for the years and remembered that there is not much info on the 1-5th gen, and ended up with all this listings and links. That's life

If you find more, please post here
Note that some dates might conflict, did not adjust them, they are as i found in the other webpages.

1st generation: July 1972 - July 1979

Re: Honda Brochures - good reference

1st gen civic (1973-1979):
http://www.1stgencivic.org/

Wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

"Civic debuted in 1973 that achieved more than 40 mpg on the highway with dimensions with a 86.6-inch wheelbase and 139.8-inch overall length. Powered by a 1170cc EB1 all aluminum engine except for the cylinder liner, with the 2 speed Hondamatic or 4 speed standard transmission made this quite the economy car to drive. In 1974 the engine grew to 1237cc EB2 and grew 146.9-inch in length. The cylinder head is aluminum with a cross flow design, intake ports on the back and exhaust on the front side. This design generally produces more power than others with both ports on the same side.

In 1978 the cylinder head (EB3) was redesigned with larger intake and exhaust valves and larger straighter intake & exhaust ports including a deeper combustion chamber with domed pistons. This engine design lends is self to high performance modifications. This design has won many racing championships including a great Canadian driver Jacques Villeneuve or American driver Adam Malley still racing his today."

The first gen brochures are here:
http://www.1stgencivic.org/1stgenera...r_brochure.htm

Also, from Wikipedia:
First Generation (1973-1979)

1st Generation Honda CivicAvailable as a hatchback and two-door sedan, Honda's first Civic was powered by an all aluminium 54 hp 1.2 litre SOHC 4-cylinder engine. In 1975, the new car featured a low-pollutant CVCC engine, which until 1983 met the strict American exhaust gas standards without the use of a catalytic converter. Transmissions included a four-speed manual or a two-speed "Hondamatic".

Worldwide the Civic caused a sensation with its design, technology and low fuel consumption %u2013 features that characterized all later models. By 1976 production had already reached the magical one million mark.

The first generation Honda Civic was introduced in 1972, but sold as a 1973 model. Equipped with a 1,169 cc (71.3 cu in) four-cylinder engine, the first generation Civic was designed to compete with American compact vehicles and offered features such as front power disc brakes and reclining vinyl bucket seats and AM radio. The Civic was available as a coupe, both a three- and a five-door hatchback, as well as a five-door station wagon. Due to the 1973 oil crisis, consumer demand for fuel efficient vehicles was high.

The CVCC engine debuted in 1975. Offered alongside the standard Civic engine, the 53 hp (40 kW; 54 PS) CVCC engine displaced 1,488 cc (90.8 cu in) and had a head design that allowed for more efficient combustion. The CVCC did not require a catalytic converter or unleaded fuel to meet emissions standards. Only the CVCC engine was available in California due to stricter emissions standards.[10]

EB1- 1169cc, black interior, honeycomb grill
EB2- 1240cc, same body as the EB1, several choices for interior color
EB3- 1240cc, revised hood, head rest on front seats, revised bumpers with plastic end caps, horizontal running grille, revised tail lights.

You can also find a member's ride here, thanks, Bumada, nice 1979

2nd gen (1980-1983) is located on the same site

Brochures
http://www.1stgencivic.org/2ndgenera..._brochures.htm

Wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

from wikipedia:

Second generation (1979-1983)

2nd Generation Honda CivicThe second generation Civic saw its external dimensions increase. Two different engines were available - the 1300 (55 hp) and the 1500 (67 hp) - in base and DX trims. In 1981, a four-door sedan debuted along with a three-speed automatic tranmission. A high fuel-efficient model, the FE, appeared in 1982, while a sporty "S" was introduced in 1983.

The second generation Honda Civic was introduced in 1980. It was larger, had a more angular shape, and came with increased engine power. All Civic engines now used the CVCC design, which added a 3rd valve per cylinder; this introduced lean burn swirl technology. The base 1335 cc ("1300") engine made 55 hp (41 kW), with an optional 1488 cc ("1500") engine giving 67 hp (50 kW). Three transmissions were offered: a four-speed manual (on base models), a five-speed manual, and a two-speed semi-automatic that was unique to the industry.

Re: Honda Brochures - good reference

Third generation (1984-1987)

Wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

3rd Generation Honda CivicThe Civic became more sophisticated. The wheelbase increased 5 inches to 96.5 inches, matching that of the Accord's. A new 1.5-liter engine producing 76 horsepower was introduced except on the base hatchback, which turned out 60 horsepower. The line-up was made up of three hatchbacks (base, DX and S), a wagon, a sedan and a new two-seat sport version called the CRX. In 1985, a CRX Si became available with fuel injection and and 91 horsepower. In 1986, there was a refreshening that included flush-mounted headlights, a four-speed automatic, and a Si version of the Civic Hatchback.

The third generation was released in 1984. The separate five-door hatchback and wagon models were merged into a four-door "shuttle wagon" or "wagovan" sometimes referred to colloquially as a "breadbox" due to its appearance. An additional two-seat coupe style%u2014labeled CRX%u2014was introduced, noted for its compact dimensions and light weight. The third generation Civic saw the introduction of the long running four-cylinder D series engine including a new 1.5 L (91.5 cu in) CVCC engine. 1984 also saw the release of a high-performance Si model for the Japanese market, featuring upgraded suspension and the 1.6 L (97.6 cu in) DOHC ZC engine which was rated at 130 PS. Si models were offered in the US as a 3-door Civic Si hatchback and the CRX Si variant with a 91 horsepower (68 kW) fuel injected SOHC 12-valve engine. A 4WD engine with different transmission mounts was introduced for the first time in 1984, and later upgraded in 1987. It delivered a fuel economy commensurate with today's AWD SUVs of around 28mpg highway. The AWD system was push-button operated and called "realtime" because it could be engaged and disengaged while driving. The manual transmission featured a synchronized 6th gear, called "SL," which was used for very low speeds.

Re: Honda Brochures - good reference

4th gen civics (1988-1991)
from civic 4G forum:
http://www.civic4g.com/index.php/4th...o/4th-gen-info

Wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

4th gen info:
The 4th generation Honda Civic was introduced in Europe at the IAA in Frankfurt Germany in September 1987. It was a very technical advanced car for its time, 4 valves per cylinder, double wishbone suspension front and rear and VTEC for the top model hatchback. It was available as 3 door hatchback, 4 door sedan, wagon (shuttle) and 3 door coupe (CRX). Rover build their 200 and 400 series on the Civic base.
A wide variety of engines was available for the 4th generation Civic. From a 1.2L SOHC to the 1.6L DOHC VTEC.

Base model of the 4th generation Civic was a 1.2L SOHC, this single carbureted engine was not available for the European and American market. For Europe the base model was the 1.3Luxe (DX for the United Kingdom) and 23L/23U for the Japanese market 1.3L SOHC single carbureted engine.
Next engine was the 1.4L (GL) which was not available in the USA and Japan. It was a 1.4L SOHC dual carburetted engine which was available in most countries only in 1988 and 1989. It was replaced by the 1.5i GL and GLX in 1990. In some countries however the carburetted engines staid available after 1989.
The 1.5L SOHC engine came in a wide variety, dual-point injection, single carburetted and dual carburetted. Those engines were available in the JDM 25X/25XT, USDM DX and the USDM STD model (USDM base model), EDM 1.5i GL and GLX (only difference between EDM GL and GLX is a different standard equipment and a different FDR).
Next in line was the 1.6L SOHC. Simply 1.6i for the European market and Si for the American market (USDM top model). (not to be confused with the JDM Si which is a 1.6L DOHC)
Second highest model was the JDM Si. It was equipped with a 1.6L DOHC (ZC) engine and produced 130hp. The EDM 1.6i GT and 1.6i-16 (depends on country) had a ZC like 1.6L DOHC engine and had a stock 124hp (D16Z5) or 130hp (D16A9). All DOHC engines are equipped with Honda's multipoint fuel injection system (although there seems to have been a 1.6L DOHC non-VTEC with dual carburetors for the 4th gen.).
Top model of the hatchback was the Japanese SiR with the 160hp B16A engine. In Europe the SiR was called 1.6i-VT and had a similar B16A1 engine. These top models of the 4th generation Civic were one of the first Honda's that were equipped with the famous VTEC system (the NSX was the first, the JDM 90/91 Integra XSi/RSi also had a B16A). See the VTEC section for more info on the SiR and 1.6i-VT.

In 1990 the 4th gen Civic had a light "facelift". Things that changed were the front bumper design, the front corner lights no longer had the two screws on the outside, the gauge cluster cover shape slightly changed, tail light units design changed and USDM Civics' got door mounted seatbelts (88-89 had frame mounted seatbelts).

from wikipedia:

Fourth generation (1988-1991)

4th Generation Honda CivicThe Civic became sleeker as well as larger. This generation saw the introduction of four-valve-per-cylinder engines across all models as well as fuel injection. And for the first time, the double wishbone suspension system used on the Accord and Prelude was incorporated in front and rear to guarantee excellent stability and handling. The LX model was introduced with more standard features compared to the DX, and an even more feature-laden EX was introduced in 1990 as part of the mid model lifecyle refresh. The Civic Si Hathaback departed but returned for 1989.

The three door hatchback comes in three trims DX, STD., and Si. The DX is the basic model. Thr STD. (Standerd) is the DX just they added passenger mirror, leather like seats, interior clock, and a tape player. The Si model was the top of the line, The Si gave you body colored bumpers, moonroof, tachometer, sporty tail pipe, and a 1.6 liter engine with multipiont fuel injection ,but not one of the hatchbacks have power windows.

The Civic 5-door hatchback came in one trim 4WD, it basically has Power steering and 4-wheel drive. it has the same 1.5 liters as the rest (except the Si) and no power windows.

In late 1987 the fourth generation civic arrived and were sold as 1988 models. The hatchbacks arrvied first then the sedans arrived a few months later.
For 1988 the Civic was redesigned with increased dimensions and a lower hood line. A wide range of models and trim levels were offered for various markets around the world. The most notable of which include The Japanese market SiR, the European VTi (both featuring the new B16A DOHC VTEC engine), the UK/European 1.6i-16 (DOHC D16A9 engine) and the New Zealand market GTi (featuring full leather interior and a tuned version of the successful SOHC D16A7 engine). All U.S. models featured electronic fuel injection, but carbureted models were still available elsewhere. The fourth generation saw the introduction of a fully independent rear suspension across the entire model range.[17][not in citation given]In addition, the Honda CRX continued to be part of the Civic family which included the the HF, DX, and Si model in the U.S.A.

Re: Honda Brochures - good reference

5th gen (1992-1995)

Wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

from wikipedia:

Fifth generation (1992-1995)

5th Generation Honda Civic is reshaped into a more aerodynamic design, and both the coupe and sedan ride on a longer wheelbase. The wagon is dropped and the two-seater del Sol debuts in 1993 as a replacement for the CRX. From a safety point of view the fifth generation was responsible for a driver-side airbag and the introduction of ABS on the EX sedan.
Introduced in 1992, the redesigned Civic featured increased dimensions, as well as more aerodynamic styling. The wagon variant was now only available in the Japanese market where the previous generation wagon was carried over until 1995. The efficiency of the previous HF model was replaced by the VX hatchback which, with an EPA rating of 48/55 MPG, was Honda's most fuel efficient model sold at the time. In North America the Si featured a SOHC VTEC valve train, where as the VX featured the VTEC-E. The Japanese Si featured a DOHC non-VTEC valve train D16A9. In New Zealand the powerful Civic GTi was revised. Continuing in the sporty tradition of the original Civic SiR, Honda sold several similarly equipped variants of the fifth generation car, still referred to as the Civic SiR, in Japan, Asia, and Europe.

6th gen - will not go in details since this is well documented in the forum

wikipedia main article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_C..._generation%29

6th specs:
http://6thgenerationcivic.webs.com/usdmspecs.htm

body style differences
http://6thgenerationcivic.webs.com/b...ifferences.htm

The sixth generation featured updated styling although less radical than previous redesigns. Suspension and engine options were their first Natural Gas Powered Civic, the GX. In 1996-2000 they made the EX, DX, LX, HX, CX, Si; all base models were made with 1.6L engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (D16) and the popular Si is a DOHC (B16A2) The first civic SI coupe EM1 was introduced in 1999.

Re: Honda Brochures - good reference

Looking at those brochures is almost bittersweet even though some came out before I was born lol. I wish I could've bought a brand new CRX but I'll have my opportunity with future Honda's, especially the NSX replacement.
