BMW owner tapes black car to white
When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.

Re: BMW owner tapes black car to white
well its a nice alternative if you can't afford a real paint job. oem quality paint would probably close to $5-6k. This is $1500-1800.
They already use it on buses, for the ads. Y

like you guys said, they've been doing vinyl wraps on car/trucks/buses for quite a while now, but usually for advertising purposes. i'd always wondered about it. plus, it's an alternative if you want to see what your car would look like in a particular color, before paying to have it painted. i wonder if they do the jambs as well...hmmmm

I bet from 10 feet away, or even five, you cant tell the difference. My only issue would be trying to wax it or getting a nice shine off of it. I might do this for my next bank job.
I had Vynol on my car for years before I pulled it off and you cant even tell it was ever there. paint looked brand new when we pulled it off.

i wonder how they did it around the door handles, gas tank, and such cause i bet you can tell up close that its really a sticker. and what do you detail it with, vinyl protectant? lol. i wonder if it would turn yellow after a year under the sun. it just seems like a ton of work for nothing. and hopefully there are no cut marks on the paint from trimming the vinyl to fit.

Re: BMW owner tapes black car to white
i'm sure the work is warranted for at least a year. Most of the cost is probably in the labor given all the detail that would be needed on the smaller handles and tail light areas.
