hypermiling?

anybody heard about this or anybody in this forum that does this?
it's some crazy and hectic method of driving where you don't brake when making turns, turning off the engine when going downhill, etc etc.
won't this damage your car? turning off the engine and then turning it back on? doing that back and forth??

Re: hypermiling?

I've heard of hyper-miling before. It's too much work for me to save a few bucks each fill up. I just do the most obvious things that improve mileage. Usually people who do it are people who have wayyy to much time on their hands and want to brag about their sweet Prius.

Re: hypermiling?

yeah, they dont realize its gonna take them 15-20 yrs of driving JUST to break even with the extra money they paid for the car lmao. and its slower than a civic too. and thats not even considering the $5k they have to pay every 5 yrs for a new battery pack. assuming they keep it for 15 yrs, they wouldve spent enough money on batteries to buy a second new car! and thats assuming nothing else goes wrong! now you understand a bit better just how retarded you must be to own one.

Re: hypermiling?

Try using your power brakes when your car is turned off going downhill. Better yet, turn the ignition all the way back so the wheel locks and you REALLY get.... oh well you know the rest.

This sounds like a myth busters episode. I love the one where they compared having your windows down vs AC.

That's a little exaggerated. My parents bought an Accord hybrid and that thing gets amazing mileage for the amount of power it has and the weight it carries. I think that we calculated when we bought it that the premium over a similarly optioned V6 Accord would pay off after 5 or so years, and it has more power . If you don't drive it like a race car then you can get 25-26 in the city and in the 30's on the highway, try that with the standard Accord V6.

As battery technology improves I really think regenerative braking and "auto-stop" when the car is stopped in drive has great benefits for mileage.

I tried that once I got good mileage and then had to pay for a new windshield because those bitches throw a lot of rocks. So.. in the end I think I lost money. I wasn't tailgating the truck either.

Re: hypermiling?

that guy drove an accord, and he got 50 mpg!!! he said that he had to think 3 lights ahead of him so he knew what he should do. cause he drove an automatic, but his hands were busier than driving a manual at a traffic jam.

I know of a person who took a '92 Accord and would shut off the engine downhill, and when the car slowed down too much, he just put the car in gear (a 5-speed manual) and started the engine back up by engaging the clutch with the ignition on. His mileage jumped from high 20's to low 70's! I personally have shut off the engine downhill on my 92 Civic and when started slowing down, I put back in 5th gear and engaged the clutch to restart the engine with the ignition on, and had no problems. This method eliminates extra wear on the starter.

Someone who hypermiled in this was told me: If you keep your foot lightly on the brake when you need it after shutting off the engine, there's still enough brake boost to keep your brakes working fine for the first application or two. After that, the brake pedal starts getting hard to push (by experience I know!)

Also, you only increase mileage if you keep the ignition on. If it is turned off, the speedometer and odometer will shut off also.

Please don't bump 2 year old threads.

Especially when they're on something stupid and dangerous like this.
