question about a noise
yes i have a 2001 honda civic. lately everytime i start the engine and start to drive off there is a very loud scretching/whinning sound. at first i though it was the belts but there is no sign of glazing from where it would be rubbing. so the only other thing i can think of is maybe its the pulley that the belt is on. i believe its coming from the pulley that holds the powere steering belt but im not sure. it maybe the other one. i was just wondering if anyone has ever had this problem and if so what is it? thanks.
It could still be your belts. You should buy new belts and put them on. Theyre cheap, and if it doesnt fix the problem, youve just eliminated one possibility. Not only that, but it is an 01 and they have probably never been changed.

hey everyone, just wanted to say i fixed the problem. i replaced both belts and tighten down the tensioner which by the looks of it looked like it had slid down over time. so i just tighten it back up and replaced the belts. now everythings great. thanks for the help.
I have the same problem. Its very loud now when I start the car, and as I drive and the engine revs up the whining gets louder untill the engin warms up a while then the noise stops. It sounds like a belt I just havant had time to get around to looking at it, glad I know what to look for now.

Ok, I know its kinda hard to tell by this pic, BUT, you want to loosen the #13 nut and the #28 nut, the #28 nut looks like its hard to get in there, but if you just pop the power steering fluid tank out of the way (just slides up off the bracket) you can get right to it. As soon as you loosen those turn that #9 bolt until you have enough tension (usually about a 1/4" deflection). Thats how you tension the power steering belt.

On this picture, loosen the top alternator bolt (not pictured) and bolt #14, then you are going to want to tighten bolt #13 until the belt has the proper tension. Thats how you tighten the alternator belt.
Hope that helps.
