I'm sure the car was lightened before they took a shot at that, but I think they forgot about the aerodynamics of the car. Maybe they assumed that at that speed that wind and air resistance wouldn't play a big role? Besides that, why didn't they think to reinforce the car's body panels, etc? Everything just came flying off which probably means the car was put together by some bored dudes with a welder.

Who knows, the dude was stupid enough to try something like this, I doubt he really planned for all the different factors.
